Prakarana 11

This section of Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa (around Doha 100–109) transforms viraha-karuṇā (the sorrow of separation) into bhakti-ānanda (devotional bliss). The pain of exile becomes instruction in pilgrimage and śaraṇāgati: Rāma’s coming to Gaṅgā’s bank is the seeker’s leaving the bank of ego. In the Kevat episode, beneath the cleverness of folk speech lies a profound principle—the fear of “foot-dust” is in truth the caution of love, and the refusal of “fare” is the ideal of desireless dāsya. In the Prayāga description, the outer greatness of the tīrtha turns inward through Rāma-darśana: the fruit of the Lord of tīrthas is “meeting Rāma.” At Bharadvāja’s āśrama, the worth of tapas, japa, and tyāga is proven by the gain of darśana—this kāṇḍa-step draws the seeker out of reliance on ritual action and grants steadiness in reliance on Nāma and in exclusive bhakti.

"If beasts are so distraught at parting from him, how will his subjects, and his mother and father, go on living?" Rama sent Sumantra away, though against his will, and then came on his own to the bank of the heavenly river. He asked for a boat, but the boatman would not bring it. He said, "I know your secret. Everyone says that the dust of your lotus feet is a root that works on men, a charm of some kind. At its touch a stone became a lovely woman. Wood is no harder than stone. My boat too will turn into a sage's wife, and it will fly away, and I will be left stranded on the road. With this boat I support my whole family; I know no other trade or business. If, my lord, you are set on crossing over, then tell me to wash your lotus feet."

Let Lakshmana shoot me with his arrows if he will, but until I have washed your feet, O merciful Lord, I will not ferry you across. So says Tulsidas.

The Ocean of Compassion spoke with a smile: "Do that by which your boat will not be lost. Bring water quickly and wash my feet. We are losing time; take me across." He by whose name, remembered but once, men cross the boundless ocean of worldly existence, that same merciful Lord was now entreating a boatman, he by whom the world was made smaller than his three strides. Seeing the nails of his feet, the divine river Ganga rejoiced; and hearing the Lord's words, her mind was drawn into delusion. The boatman received Rama's command and came back bringing a wooden basin filled with water. Overflowing with great joy and love, he began to wash the Lord's lotus feet. All the gods rained down flowers and looked on with longing, saying, "There is no one equal to him in the store of merit."

Having washed the Lord's feet and drunk the water, he with all his family, and having thus carried his forefathers across the ocean of existence, the boatman then joyfully took the Lord across the river.

Having landed, they stood on the sands of the Ganges, Sita and Rama together with Guha and Lakshmana. The boatman also got down and prostrated himself before the Lord. The Lord felt embarrassed that he had given him nothing. Sita, who could read her beloved's heart, joyfully took off her jeweled ring. The Merciful One said, "Take your fare for the crossing." The boatman, in distress, clasped his feet. "Lord, what have I not received today? The fire of my faults, sorrows and poverty has been put out." "For a long time I have labored for hire. Today Providence has given me a fine and ample wage." "Now, Lord, I need nothing more. O Friend of the lowly, I have your grace." "When you return, whatever you give me, I shall accept that gift, bowing my head."

Then the Lord of the Raghu line bathed, worshipped the earthen Shiva-linga, and bowed his head. Sita folded her hands and said to the heavenly river: "O Mother, fulfil my desire. Let me return in safety with my husband and his brother, and offer you worship again." Hearing Sita's prayer, steeped in the sweetness of love, a gracious voice then came from the pure waters of the river. "Listen, Sita, beloved of Rama, the hero of the Raghus: whom in the world is your power unknown to? By your mere glance people become guardians of the worlds, and all the powers of magic serve you with folded hands. In offering me this humble petition, you have shown me kindness and given me honor. Even so, O goddess, I give you my blessing, so that my own words may prove true."

Hearing the words of Ganga, the root of all blessing, Sita was glad that the heavenly river was so favourable. Then the Lord told Guha, "Go home." Hearing this, Guha's face went dry and his heart burned. With folded hands Guha spoke in humble words: "Listen to my plea, jewel of the Raghu line." "Lord, let me stay with you and show you the way, and serve your feet for some four days." "In whatever forest you go to dwell, O Lord of the Raghus, I will make you a fair hut of leaves." "After that, whatever command you give me, I will do it, I swear by Raghubir." Seeing Guha's natural, unfeigned love, Rama took him along, and Guha's heart was filled with joy. Then Guha called together all his kinsmen, and having satisfied them with kind assurances, sent them away.

That day he stayed under a tree, and Lakshmana and his friend made every comfortable arrangement. At dawn, having performed his morning rites, the Lord of the Raghus went and saw Prayaga, the king of all holy places. Truth is his minister and Faith his beloved queen, and Madhava, equal to himself, is his friend and well-wisher. His treasury is filled with the four great prizes of life, and his realm is a holy region, a most lovely land. His sacred ground is unapproachable, a strong and beautiful fortress, which his enemies have never reached even in a dream. All the holy places are his army, excellent warriors, steady in battle, who crush the host of sins. The confluence of the rivers is his throne, most splendid, and the undying Banyan tree is his canopy, which charms the minds of sages. The waves of the Yamuna and the Ganga are his fly-whisks, and at the sight of them sorrow and poverty are destroyed.

Who can describe the glory of Prayaga, a lion, king of beasts, against the elephant that is the mass of sin? Seeing such a lovely lord of holy places, Rama, the best of the Raghus and an ocean of joy, felt delight. With his own lips he told Sita, Lakshmana and his friend of the greatness of the king of holy places. Having bowed to it, he looked upon the woods and gardens, speaking of the sanctity of the place with deep devotion. In this way he came and beheld the Triveni, which, when remembered, grants every blessing. Joyfully he bathed there and offered worship to Shiva, and duly worshipped the deities of the holy place. Then the Lord came to Bharadvaja, and as Rama prostrated himself, the sage clasped him to his heart. The joy in the sage's heart cannot be put into words; it was as though he had found a treasure of the bliss of Brahma.

The sage asked after their welfare and gave them seats; he honored them with worship and filled them with his love. He brought and offered bulbs, roots, fruits and fresh shoots of the finest kind, which seemed like nectar. Rama, together with Sita, Lakshmana and his attendant, sat there in beauty, and ate the roots and fruits with great relish. Rama was happy and his weariness was gone; then Bharadvaja spoke in gentle words. Today my austerity, my pilgrimages and my renunciation have borne fruit; today my prayer, my yoga and my detachment have borne fruit. All my store of holy practices has borne fruit, O Rama, now that I behold you today. This is the limit of all gain, and there is no other limit of happiness beyond it; in seeing you, all my hopes are fulfilled. Now, of your kindness, grant me this boon: a natural, spontaneous love for your lotus feet.

Hearing the sage's words, Rama was abashed, and he was filled to the full with emotion, devotion and delight. Then Rama, the best of the Raghus, told everyone the sage's lovely renown, praising it in a million ways. He said: "Great is he, a dwelling place of all virtues, on whom you, O lord of sages, bestow honor." The sage and Rama bowed to one another, and felt a joy beyond the reach of words. When the dwellers of Prayaga heard this news, the students, ascetics, sages, siddhas and renunciants, all came to Bharadvaja's hermitage, to see the beautiful sons of Dasharatha. Rama bowed to them all, and they rejoiced, having gained the full reward of their eyes. They gave their blessings, having found the highest joy, and went back praising his beauty.

Rama said lovingly to the sage, "Lord, tell us by which road we should go." The sage smiled in his heart and said to Rama, "Every road is easy for you." The sage called his disciples to go along with them; hearing his call, they came gladly, some fifty of them. All of them had boundless love for Rama, and each one said, "We know the way; we have seen it." Then the sage gave four young students to go with them, who in many births had done all manner of good deeds. Having bowed to the sage and received his leave, the Lord of the Raghus set out with a joyful heart. When Rama and his party passed close to a village, the men and women ran out to behold the sight of him. They felt blessed with a protector, having gained the fruit of their birth; then they turned back sorrowful, sending their hearts along with him.

Rama sent the young disciples back with courteous words, and they returned with their hearts' desire fulfilled. Then he went down and bathed in the water of the Yamuna, which was dark as his own body.
