Mantra 4

Inside Sukta 7

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A benediction: may Agni grant well-being from both heaven and earth and implant a universal, enduring life for sacrifice (RV 10.7.1).

  2. Development

The hymn turns to Agni as the constant house-priest who guards the home and makes the worshipper’s thoughts effective and victorious, aligned with ṛta (e.g., RV 10.7.4).

  3. Climax

Agni is asked to become simultaneously helper and guardian, maker and holder of vitality—uniting protection, life-force, and successful offering in one divine agency (RV 10.7.7).

  4. Where it settles

It ends with gifts of “havyadāti” (offering’s bounty) and a final plea for bodily protection and an unhindered course—life sustained without falling away from the path.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the divine Fire—kindled on the altar and in the home—praised as hotṛ (priest), messenger, knower of rites, and protector who carries offerings to the gods and returns blessings to humans.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between worlds (earth–midspace–heaven), transformer of offerings into divine reach, and upholder of ṛta through correct ritual and truthful illumination.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened fire of consciousness: discernment (praketá), inspired intelligence (dhī), and the inner heat (tapas) that purifies, protects, and sustains life on a disciplined path.

The seer

  • AniruktaThis sukta is transmitted without a named seer; such anirukta hymns are valued for preserving communal priestly prayer-forms centered on Agni as household and sacrificial guardian.
