Inside Sukta 122

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct call to bring forward the guarded Soma and sacrifice to Rudra, immediately pairing him with the Marut-host poised between the worlds.

  2. Development

Praise expands from divine might to benevolence: Rudra’s capacity to heal and the Maruts’ coordinated force are celebrated as powers that secure prosperity and ward off harm.

  3. Climax

The hymn’s peak is the confident alignment of human rite with atmospheric/cosmic power—storm-energy becomes protection and victorious impetus when rightly praised and offered to.

  4. Where it settles

It settles into affirmation and blessing: the invoked powers are asked to remain gracious, granting strength, safe movement, and well-being to the worshippers.

The deity: Rudra with the Maruts

  • In the VedaRudra is the fierce yet beneficent lord—archer, healer, and master of medicines—approached with reverence so that his wrath turns to grace. The Maruts are his youthful, radiant companions: a troop of storm-warriors, loud, swift, and splendid, moving between the two worlds.
  • Cosmic functionThey govern the dynamism of the atmosphere—storm, wind, thunder, and the energizing shock that clears, purifies, and renews—while also guarding the cosmic order by driving away harm and hostility.
  • Inner significanceRudra represents the transforming force that can wound or heal: disciplined intensity, truth-shock, and the power to purge inner poison. The Maruts signify coordinated life-forces—courage, breath-like vitality, and collective resolve—channeling that intensity into protection and forward movement.

The seer

  • Kutsa Āṅgirasa (traditional ascription; exact rishi uncertain in some recensions)Āṅgirasa (Angiras line) · Associated with early Mandala 1 hymns and with vigorous, martial praise that links divine storm-power to human prosperity and protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

The hymn chiefly worships Rudra together with the Maruts, his storm-like companions. Rudra is praised as both fierce and healing, while the Maruts represent powerful, coordinated divine energies.

It asks that the sacrifice—especially the Soma offering—reach Rudra properly, so his power becomes protective and healing rather than harmful. It also seeks strength, safe movement, and success for the worshippers.

The Maruts are portrayed as Rudra’s host and as forces that move between heaven and earth. Invoking them with Rudra emphasizes disciplined storm-energy: courage, vitality, and protection working together.
