Inside Sukta 21

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct call: Indra is invited to come near for protection and to be present in the common rite, praised as the ever-growing hero of many powers (RV 4.21.1).

  2. Development

The hymn expands Indra’s might into ritual-psychological imagery: through dhiṣā the seekers take their seats on swift paths, press toward the finding of light (go), and the Hotṛ/Vahni principle becomes active within the enclosed field of life (RV 4.21.6).

  3. Climax

Indra’s response is pictured as a flooding increase—he swells the singer’s iṣ (impulse/nourishment) like rivers in spate, confirming the efficacy of praise and offering.

  4. Where it settles

A ‘new brahman’ is fashioned for Indra; the singers ask to remain fit for the chariot-path and to be constant companions under his guidance (RV 4.21.11).

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is the praised Śūra (hero), wielder of irresistible force (taviṣī), victorious in abhibhūti (overmastering), and the great giver who swells the singer’s impulse like rivers.
  • Cosmic functionHe upholds kṣatra (sovereign power), breaks obstructions, releases the waters/light, and grants victory, expansion, and protection to the sacrificer and the clan.
  • Inner significanceIndra symbolizes the awakened will and conquering clarity that breaks inner resistance, releases pent-up energies, and turns inspired thought (dhiṣā) into effective power and progress on the ‘chariot-path’ of right action.

The seer

  • Vāmadeva GautamaGautama (gotra); traditionally linked with the Vāmadeva seer-family in Mandala 4 · A principal seer of the Fourth Maṇḍala, renowned for powerful Indra hymns and for a style that often bridges ritual action with inner illumination (dhiṣā, go/light imagery).

  • Vāmadeva is later remembered in Vedic tradition as an exemplary ṛṣi associated with inspired speech (brahman) and victorious divine aid.

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the ritual ground and seat the priests; establish the sacred session (sadhamāda).
  • Kindle/affirm the bearer-flame (vahni/Hotṛ function) and begin the praises to invite Indra near (ā yātu).

Frequently Asked Questions

The hymn asks Indra to come near, sit with the worshippers in the ritual gathering, and grant protection, victory, and the increase of strength and sovereign power.

Dhiṣā means inspired intelligence. The hymn says that when seekers act with dhiṣā, they reach the swift paths of the rite and find “go,” a Vedic symbol for light, increase, and the recovered riches of truth.
