Sukta 9.1
रक्षोहा विश्वचर्षणिरभि योनिमयोहतम् । द्रुणा सधस्थमासदत् ॥
rakṣó-hā viśvá-carṣaṇir abhí yónim áyo-hatam | druṇā́ sadha-sthám ā́ asadat ||
Soma, slayer of rakṣas, belonging to all men, sits upon the womb (yoni), firm like iron-smote; he takes his seat on the common base/foundation.
As Soma purifies, it becomes a force that destroys hostile formations (rakṣas)—dark, devouring impulses and thoughts that feed on consciousness. ‘Belonging to all peoples’ indicates this bliss is universal in the human instrument, not sectarian. The ‘yoni’ is the secure seat or matrix of manifestation in us (the prepared inner vessel); ‘iron-smote’ suggests a firm, tempered foundation—stability and endurance created by tapas and repeated purification. Established on the ‘sadhastha’ (common foundation), Soma can work steadily in the shared ground of mind-life-body without being stolen by lower forces.
Higher joy must be stabilized in a prepared vessel; when delight is made steady, it naturally repels destructive tendencies and becomes a universal support for life.
protection from darkness, ritual seat, purified Soma, foundation of the work
Soma Pavamāna seer-line emphasizing purification and establishment of divine states.
The seer stresses not only ecstasy but seat (āsana): spiritual experience must ‘sit’ firmly in the yoni of the being, becoming durable and protected from hostile forces.
Purifier and protector; establishes the nectar of immortality in the sacrificial seat; repels anti-divine agencies.
Protective bliss that seals leaks of consciousness; creates a tempered base where aspiration can proceed safely.
Soma filtration/purification chants (Pavamāna)
आ । अ॒स॒द॒त् ॥
rakṣaḥ-hā | viśva-carṣaṇiḥ | abhi | yonim | ayaḥ-hatam | druṇā | sadha-stham | ā | asadat
24
3 × 8
Measured and stabilizing; suitable for ‘āsadat’ (taking seat).
Produces containment and firmness; good for centering after energetic uplift.
Pavamāna sequence: Soma’s settling into the straining-vat and ritual seat; protection of the rite from rákṣas (polluting influences)
As Soma is strained and made fit; protective aspect against rakṣas is ritually important.
Chanting during flow through pavitra; establishing Soma in the vessel/altar context.
Use when dealing with intrusive thoughts/compulsions: chant to ‘seat’ calm joy firmly and let it dissolve hostile patterns.
rakṣaḥ-hā: bahuvrīhi/compound ‘Rakṣas-slayer’ (√han ‘to strike/kill’). viśva-carṣaṇi-: ‘of all carṣaṇi’ (carṣaṇi ‘people/men’, possibly from √kṛṣ ‘plough/settle’ → ‘settled folk’, extended to ‘human domains’). yoni- ‘womb/source’ (generative base). ayaḥ-hata-: ayaḥ ‘metal’ + √han ‘strike’ → ‘forged/tempered’. sadha-stha- from sadha ‘together’ + stha ‘standing’ → ‘common standing-place’.
R̥ta as secure foundation (sadhastha), purification vs. distortion (rakṣas), establishment (sthiti) of consciousness
Purification is movement into ṛta; rakṣas represent deviation/anti-ṛta forces.
Stability (‘iron-forged’) supports truth-holding capacity of the mind.
Descent and fixation of immortal delight into the manifested base; protection of the created order from devourers.
Yoga of transformation: establishing higher consciousness in the adhāra (support) so it can act in nature.
Forging = repeated practice; seat = stable posture/adhāra; filtering = discrimination; rakṣas = subconscious invasions.
Establish a ‘seat’ of quiet joy in the heart/solar plexus; let it become iron-firm against distraction.
Manipura/Anahata as the ‘yoni/seat’ of stable force and warmth; grounding into Muladhara for firmness.
Long exhale with gentle breath retention (bahya kumbhaka) for a moment to ‘seal’ the state; keep it mild.
Protected steadiness; luminous containment.
After chanting, sit upright and feel a stable, bright base in the torso. When intrusive thoughts arise, return attention to that ‘sadhastha’ foundation and let the thought dissolve in the Soma-field.
Gāyatrī; emphasize rakṣohā and āsadat as semantic peaks; exact udatta/anudatta requires svara-marked text.
Keep pāda breaks clean; slightly weight ‘rakṣohā’ (protective opening) and ‘ā asadat’ (settling).
rakṣohā: retroflex ṣ; long ō; hā with long ā, viśvacarṣaṇiḥ: clear ś; retroflex ṇ; final ḥ light, yoniṃ: nasalized ‘ṃ’ (anusvāra) before pause, ayaḥhatam: visarga ḥ before h; keep both h sounds distinct, sadhastham: dental dh; conjunct sth, āsadat: long ā; dental d
Firm, centered, slightly deeper tone to convey establishment.
