Chandas

Gāyatrī (3 pādas of 8 syllables)

Inside Sukta 9

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens by acclaiming the Waters as joy-giving powers and asks them to place nourishing energy within the worshipper (10.9.1).

  2. Development

Petitions broaden from vigor and clear sight to protection, prosperity, and especially healing—waters as sovereign ‘medicine’ dwelling among peoples (e.g., 10.9.5).

  3. Climax

A moment of communion: the speaker moves with the Waters and becomes harmonized with their rasa, the living essence that restores wholeness (10.9.9).

  4. Where it settles

The hymn resolves by drawing Agni into the renewed condition—requesting varcas (radiant potency) so purification becomes enduring strength and clarity.

The deity: Āpaḥ

  • In the VedaThe Waters are addressed as mayobhuvaḥ—makers of joy and well-being—bestowers of ūrj (nourishing vigor) and as a bheṣajam (healing remedy). They are treated as living, sovereign powers that cleanse, sustain, and carry rasa, the vital essence.
  • Cosmic functionTo sustain life through moisture and fertility, to purify and renew beings, and to serve as a medium of vitality (rasa) through which health, strength, and clarity circulate in the world-order (ṛta).
  • Inner significanceSymbol of inner cleansing and emotional-spiritual renewal: the washing away of fatigue, impurity, and disorder, restoring clarity of perception (cakṣas) and the steady energy needed for life’s ‘battle’ (raṇa).

The seer

  • Sindhudvīpa ĀmbaraTraditional Anukramaṇī seer of the celebrated Āpaḥ-sūkta (RV 10.9), frequently invoked for purification, health, and auspiciousness through water.
