निरिन्द्र भूम्या अधि वृत्रं जघन्थ निर्दिवः । सृजा मरुत्वतीरव जीवधन्या इमा अपोऽर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम् ॥
nír indra bhū́myā ádhi vṛtráṃ jaghantha nír diváḥ | sṛjá marútvatīr áva jīvá-dhanyā imā́ apó ’rcann ánu sva-rā́jyam ||
O Indra, thou didst smite Vṛtra and cast him out from the foundation of the earth and from heaven. Release downward these waters full of Marut-force, rich in life-wealth; may these waters shine following thy sovereign mastery.
Indra’s victory is total: the Coverer is expelled from both ‘earth’ (physical base) and ‘heaven’ (mental heights)—meaning obstruction can occupy dense habits and also lofty ideologies; both must be cleared. Then comes the positive result: the waters—life-currents, inspirations, healing energies—are released ‘downward’ (ava) into embodied existence, not kept as a distant spiritual experience. ‘Marutvatīḥ’ indicates the waters carry the dynamic energies of the Maruts (life-forces, prāṇic powers) now harmonized with illumination. ‘Jīvadhanyāḥ’ points to life-wealth: vitality, longevity, creative power. ‘Arcann’ again is the shining/vibrating fulfillment—these waters become luminous in the being under the law of svarājya (self-rule).
True liberation is not escape upward but a removal of obstruction at all levels and a descent of purified, empowered life-energy into daily embodiment, establishing a luminous self-governed life.
Vṛtra-slaying, release-of-waters, victory-over-obstruction, inner-sovereignty, Marut-force
Gotama’s Indra sequence culminates in release and descent: victory over Vṛtra is validated by the free flow of waters into embodied life, often with Marut support.
A key Aurobindonian theme is explicit here: transformation requires descent (‘ava’) of liberated powers into the whole being—physical and vital—not merely mental illumination.
Releaser of waters and wide spaces; ruler of the luminous heaven; ally of the Maruts in dynamic action.
Illumined executive power that clears obstruction from all planes and enables descent of transformed energies.
Indra-Marut associated stotra within Soma rite; prayers for rain/waters and prosperity

4 pādas of ~11 syllables
Grand and descending; the ‘ava’ release is felt as a downward resolving cadence.
After the forceful victory, it induces a sense of opening and descent—calm strength with flowing vitality.
Indra-stotra usage within Soma rites (e.g., Agniṣṭoma context): recitation as praise to strengthen Indra’s victorious force for the release of the ‘waters’ (inner/outer prosperity).
After Vṛtra-slaying praise, to invite the released waters (rain/boons) to descend
Invocation for release and descent of waters/boons; communal well-being
For integrating spiritual insight into life: chant to invite ‘descent’ of calm energy into the body and daily action (grounding).
Key terms: vṛtra- from √vṛ ‘to cover, enclose, obstruct’ → ‘the Coverer’; psychological sense: Ignorance that blocks the free flow of consciousness. jaghantha: perfect/preterite of √han ‘to strike, slay’ with intensifying reduplicated preterite formation in Vedic usage, marking decisive victory. sṛja: imperative of √sṛj ‘to let go, release, send forth’; used for releasing waters/cows/light—here the unblocked currents of life and clarity. ap- ‘waters’ (PIE *h₂ep- ‘water’) frequently denotes dynamic streams of inspiration/clarity and life-energy in RV. sva-rājya: sva ‘self’ + rājya ‘rule’ (from √rāj ‘to rule, shine’), inner sovereignty—rule by the true self, not by the covering forces. marutvatīḥ: ‘possessed of/attended by Maruts’; Maruts from √mar/mṛ ‘to shine/crush’ (semantic field of impelling storm-powers), indicating energetic, purifying, and awakening forces accompanying the release.
Ṛta (restoration of right order by removing obstruction), Satyam–Ṛtam–Bṛhat (truth-order vastness implied by freeing the waters), inner sovereignty (sva-rājya) as a spiritual attainment
Waters released in harmony with Maruts signify restored right movement and right force in life (ṛta in the vital).
The shining (arcann) of waters indicates truth manifesting as lived energy, not concept.
Releasing primordial waters renews life and sustains creation; obstruction is anti-creation.
Integral transformation: purification of physical and mental planes, then descent of dynamic life-power aligned with illumination.
monsoon/rain-season resonance (symbolic)
Earth = body/habit; heaven = mind/ideals; waters = prāṇa/inspiration; winds = dynamic life-forces; rain descent = integration/embodiment.
After breaking an obstruction, invite the liberated energy to descend and stabilize in the body and life.
mūlādhāra (earth/grounding) and svādhiṣṭhāna (waters/flow)
Long exhale-focused breathing; on ‘sṛja ... ava’ feel breath and energy descending through spine into pelvis/legs
Open, grounded, flowing; integrated strength
Do not stop at ‘victory’ experiences. Sit quietly after chanting and feel a gentle rain of energy filling the limbs; then act in life from that calmer power—this is svarājya made practical.
Tri-svara per śākhā; keep the ‘nir … nir … sṛja … ava’ sequence clearly articulated as a three-step movement (expel-expel-release-descent).
Make ‘nir indra’ and ‘jaghantha’ forceful; soften and lengthen slightly on ‘sṛja … ava’ to embody descent; let ‘jīvadhanyāḥ’ be warm and nourishing in tone.
nir indra: light rolling ‘r’; avoid inserting a vowel after nir, bhūmyāḥ: long ū; palatal ‘y’ glide, marutvatīḥ: keep ‘tv’ cluster; long īḥ, jīvadhanyāḥ: long ī; aspirated ‘dh’, imā apo: clear separation; do not swallow the initial vowel in imāḥ
Start forceful, end flowing and benevolent; resonant, rain-like softness on the descent phrase.
