Inside Sukta 46

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

The hymn opens by naming the Astṛta-maṇi and placing its first binding under Prajāpati’s primordial authority.

  2. What it asks

Bind the amulet on for āyus (long life), varcas (splendor), ojas (vigor), and bala (strength), while maintaining round-about protection.

  3. Where its power lies

Protection is intensified by identifying the amulet with Indra’s varman and by the collective support of ‘all the gods’ who lead the wearer forth safely.

  4. How it closes

A status-and-rivalry victory formula culminates under Savitar’s sanction, sealed again with the refrain: ‘may Astṛta guard thee round about.’

Kind of hymn

Bhaisajya (Protective healing) / Paustika (Strengthening) with Mani-vidyā (amulet lore)

What it is for

Successful consecration and binding-on of the Astṛta-maṇi so it grants longevity, radiance, vigor, strength, rival-destruction, and an enduring protective perimeter.

Who it is for

Householders, healers/ritual specialists (atharvāṇas), and anyone needing protective strengthening—especially a person facing illness, danger, rivalry, or loss of status.

Also used as

  • Paustika
  • Rakṣā (protective)
  • Maṇi-vidyā (amulet lore)

The deity

Astṛta is the amulet-power treated as a living, guarding presence; Prajāpati legitimizes the binding as a primordial consecration, Indra supplies the protective ‘armor’ (varman) motif, and Savitar fixes the recipient’s superior status and forward fortune.

Powers of the deity

  • Binds and stabilizes life-force (āyus) and vitality (ojas/bala)
  • Creates a protective enclosure ‘round about’ against harm and hostile forces
  • Confers radiance/authority (varcas) and social dominance (vaśitva)
  • Nullifies rivals (asapatna, sapatnahā) and supports victory
  • Restores and ‘leads forth’ safely under divine guidance

Why the deity is called

To authorize the amulet’s installation (Prajāpati), sheath the wearer in invincible protection (Indra’s varman), and establish rivalless superiority and good destiny (Savitar), with Astṛta functioning as the constant guardian.

The seer

  • Atharvanic amulet tradition (ṛṣi not securely fixed)Atharvan. Maṇi-vidyā and kavaca (armor) charms: binding-on rites for longevity, radiance, vigor, rival-slaying, and all-around protection; yajus-like consecration formulas for wearable protections.

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 19.45 (maṇi/amulet unit context)
  • AV 19.47 (maṇi/amulet unit context)
  • AV 19.49 (late-book protective/paustika charm cluster)

Preparing for the rite

  • Select a clean Astṛta-maṇi (jewel/charm) or its corded substitute; inspect for integrity.
  • Purify the amulet and cord by rinsing/sprinkling with clean water; keep it on a clean cloth.
  • Seat the recipient facing east (or toward the ritual fire if present); steady breath and intention for protection and strengthening.

The rite

  • Recite the hymn while physically binding the amulet onto the recipient (typically on the arm/neck) with firm knots.
  • At verses invoking armor (varman), gesture an encircling motion around the body as if clothing the recipient in protection.
  • Repeat the sealing refrain ‘astṛtastvābhi rakṣatu’ as a protective enclosure, optionally circling the recipient once to mark the perimeter.
  • Conclude by touching the amulet and the recipient’s head/heart area to ‘set’ āyus, varcas, ojas, and bala.

What it needs

  • Astṛta-maṇi (amulet/jewel) or corded charm
  • Binding cord/thread (mauli/yajñopavīta-like tie)
  • Clean water for sprinkling/purification

When

Daytime is preferred for paustika aims; perform before a contest/journey, during convalescence, or at the start of a protective observance.

The main substance

Astṛta-maṇi (protective amulet/jewel; corded charm functioning as kavaca)

Amulets

  • Astṛta-maṇi (stone/jewel or symbolic substitute)
  • Protective binding cord/thread (kavaca-tie)

How it is prepared

Purify by sprinkling/rinsing with clean water; thread and knot securely while reciting the binding verses, keeping the amulet in contact with the body once installed.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a protective amulet-power treated as a living guardian. The hymn consecrates it and binds it onto a person so it continuously protects and strengthens them.
