Sukta 13

Sukta 5.13

Rishi

Atri (Ātreya) (attribution for RV 5.13 generally)

Devata

Agni

Chandas

Gāyatrī (probable for this short 3-pāda verse)

This short Agni-hymn of Atri praises the Fire as the one awakened by song, the chosen Hotṛ who makes the sacrifice spread wide and effective. It repeatedly links praise (arc-) with kindling, protection, and the drawing-near of “many-colored” prosperity, presenting Agni as the hub that gathers the gods to the rite.

Mantras

Mantra 1

Singing to you, we call you; singing, we kindle you fully. O Agni, singing, we seek your help—your uplifting protection in the work.

Mantra 2

We form in thought the hymn of Agni—effective today, touching the heaven. We are seekers of the god’s richness: the plenitude that supports the inner journey.

Mantra 3

May Agni accept our words—he who is the priest within human beings. Let him sacrifice and bring near the divine peoples (powers) into our field of action.

Mantra 4

You, O Agni, are wide in your spread; you are the accepted and choice-worthy priest. By you the sacrifice is extended and woven out into its full form.

Mantra 5

You, O Agni, most victorious in the gaining of force, the illumined seers increase by their well-made praise. Give us then the true hero-power—an energy of luminous strength.

Mantra 6

O Agni, like the nave around the spokes you encompass the gods; you are their all-surrounding master in the rite. You draw near to us a many-hued richness—varied powers of fulfillment.

Frequently Asked Questions

It teaches that Agni is awakened by praise and is the key priestly power that makes a sacrifice complete, gathers the gods to it, and brings protection and prosperity.

Because in Vedic ritual, well-formed speech and hymnody are the means to kindle Agni’s presence and effectiveness—praise is both invocation and activation.

It portrays Agni as the central hub of the ritual: just as spokes are held together by the nave, the gods and powers of the sacrifice are gathered and coordinated through Agni.
