Inside Sukta 10

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

It opens by presenting the primordial emergence of the dhenu and situating prosperity within cosmic order (Yama’s realm and the first shining-forth), implying that abundance is anchored in a lawful, timed unfolding.

  2. What it asks

That the milk-rich cow of the year ‘milk out’ for us each later year—ever-increasing nourishment, wealth, cattle, and progeny, secured through correct offering and seasonal alignment.

  3. Where its power lies

The year’s oblation is audibly and materially ‘made’ (stones sounding, havis prepared), and the Gods are worshipped with ghṛta—ritual action is portrayed as the mechanism that turns time into gain.

  4. How it closes

It culminates in safe, unharmed collective entry into the home, explicitly approaching it gomat—closing the rite by sealing prosperity into domestic space.

Kind of hymn

Paustika (Prosperity)

What it is for

Increasing annual prosperity (uttarām-uttarāṃ samām), abundance of milk/cattle/wealth, successful offering, strong progeny, and safe entry into a thriving home.

Who it is for

Householders performing yearly/cycle observances (especially around Ekāṣṭakā), families seeking cattle-wealth and progeny, and ritual specialists applying Atharvanic paustika recitation for domestic increase.

Also used as

  • Śāntika (harmonizing the year/seasonal order)
  • Rakṣā (safe return, unharmed entry)
  • Prajā-kāma (fertility/offspring-wish)
  • Gṛhya-domestic prosperity rites

The deity

The hymn treats time’s order as a living power: the Seasons and the cosmic ‘Arrangers’ (Dhātṛ–Vidhātṛ) stabilize the year, while Indra and the Devas secure gain and protection; Prajāpati underwrites generativity. The dhenu image functions as the prosperity-form of this ordered time—an ever-yielding source of milk, cattle-wealth, and increase.

Powers of the deity

  • Regulate and renew the yearly cycle (parivatsara/saṃvatsara)
  • Bestow rāyas and poṣa (wealth, plenty, nourishment)
  • Grant progeny and lineage-strength (suprajās, suvīrās)
  • Protect household movement and home-entry from harm (alupta/arakṣita-avoidance)
  • Increase cattle and movable wealth (gomat, rayi)
  • Confer ritual success through oblation (havis, ghṛta, iḍā)

Why the deity is called

To bind prosperity to the correctly ‘turned’ year—so each successive year yields greater milk-like abundance, safe domestic stability, cattle-increase, and strong offspring, especially at the Ekāṣṭakā observance.

The seer

  • Atharvanic seer (anukramaṇī not explicit)Atharvan. Paustika charms for rāyas-poṣa (wealth-and-nourishment), annual/cycle rites (saṃvatsara), household well-being with protective overtones (rakṣā)

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 3.9 (adjacent prosperity/cycle materials, traditional grouping)
  • AV 3.11 (adjacent domestic-prosperity materials, traditional grouping)
  • AV 2.26 (Iḍā/oblation-centered domestic prosperity themes, in broader Atharvanic usage)

Preparing for the rite

  • Choose a clean domestic or sacrificial space; mark a calm boundary (śānti) around the hearth/offerings.
  • Prepare ghṛta (ghee) and simple havis; set aside an iḍā-portion (ritual refreshment/share).
  • If available, place vānaspatya wood (from a sacred tree) and/or pressing-stones (grāvan) as ritual supports for the ‘year’ oblation.
  • Mentally frame the rite as a saṃvatsara-turning: invoke seasons and the makers of order (Dhātṛ–Vidhātṛ).

The rite

  • Recite the hymn in sequence, emphasizing the dhenu-verses as the prosperity-core.
  • Offer ghṛta with each suitable refrain/section; conclude with a collective deva-yajana (worship of the Gods).
  • At the Ekāṣṭakā-focused verse(s), state explicit wishes for suprajā and suvīra (good offspring, brave sons) and for rayi-lordship.
  • End by ritually ‘entering’ (or symbolically re-entering) the home-space, voicing the unharmed return and gomat (cattle-rich) approach.

What it needs

  • Ghṛta (ghee)
  • Havis (simple oblation: e.g., cooked offering/clarified-butter offering)
  • Iḍā portion (ritual share/refreshment)
  • Vānaspatya wood (sacral tree-wood)
  • Grāvan (pressing-stones) or a symbolic stone if adapting domestically
  • Optional: milk/curds as prosperity-symbol aligned to dhenu imagery

When

At the turning/marking of the year—especially Ekāṣṭakā within the annual cycle; also suitable at seasonal transitions or when commencing a new household year.

The main substance

Ghṛta (ghee) as the chief offering-substance, with dhenu/milk symbolism as the prosperity-model

Herbs

  • Vānaspatya (sacral tree/wood-power; not a medicine here but a ritual vegetal support)

Amulets

  • If adapted paustika-style, a small cowrie/seed-bundle or knotted thread may be used as a non-textual prosperity-token

How it is prepared

Clarify and warm ghṛta for offering; prepare a simple havis and set aside an iḍā share. If using vānaspatya wood, keep it clean and dedicated to the rite; place grāvan/stones as symbolic ‘sounding’ supports for the year-oblation.

Frequently Asked Questions

To make the turning year yield increasing prosperity—nourishment like milk, cattle-wealth, treasures, and strong offspring—while keeping the household safe and intact.

The dhenu is a prosperity-symbol: as a milch-cow continuously gives milk, so the rightly ordered year is asked to ‘milk out’ abundance for each succeeding year.

During annual or seasonal transition rites—particularly around Ekāṣṭakā—when households seek renewal of wealth, progeny, and protection through offerings such as ghee and havis.
