Adhyaya 89: The Hierarchy of the Trimūrti and the Manifestation of the Goddess Trikalā

Trimūrti-kramaḥ and Trikalā-devī-prādurbhāvaḥ

Theological-Cosmology (Devatā-tattva and Śakti-trividhatā)

In a pedagogical exchange framed by Pṛthivī’s inquiry, the chapter opens with her question about competing identifications of the supreme deity—Śiva, Hari (Viṣṇu), Īśāna, or Brahmā—and asks Varāha to clarify who is truly para (supreme) and apara (derivative). Varāha responds with a hierarchical cosmogony: Nārāyaṇa is supreme; from him arises Caturmukha (Brahmā), and from Brahmā arises Rudra, famed for omniscience. The narrative then shifts to Kailāsa where Brahmā and the gods seek Rudra’s protection from the daitya Andhaka. Through the converged subtle gaze of Brahmā–Viṣṇu–Maheśvara, a divine maiden (Trikalā) appears, is named and empowered, and becomes three forms—Brāhmī (creation), Vaiṣṇavī (preservation), and Raudrī (dissolution). Each undertakes tapas on distinct mountains, after which Brahmā grants the Brāhmī form “sarvagatva” to enable universal, stable creation—implicitly aligning cosmic order with terrestrial balance.

Inside Adhyaya 89

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Pṛthivī (Dharā) asks Varāha to resolve conflicting claims about the supreme deity—Śiva, Hari (Viṣṇu/Nārāyaṇa), Īśāna, or Brahmā—seeking a clear para–apara (supreme–derivative) hierarchy and the logic behind it.

  2. Central event

Varāha teaches a hierarchical cosmogony: Nārāyaṇa is para; from him arises Caturmukha Brahmā; from Brahmā arises Rudra (Maheśvara), renowned for omniscience. The scene shifts to Kailāsa where Brahmā and the gods approach Rudra for protection from Andhaka-daitya. From the unified subtle gaze/tejas of Brahmā–Viṣṇu–Maheśvara, a divine maiden manifests—Trikalā—who becomes three functional forms: Brāhmī (sṛṣṭi), Vaiṣṇavī (sthiti), and Raudrī (saṃhāra).

  3. Climax resolution

Each form undertakes tapas on distinct mountains (Śveta, Mandara, Nīla). The resolution centers on empowering creation: Brahmā grants Brāhmī ‘sarvagatva’ (all-pervasiveness) so creation can become stable and universally operative—implying that cosmic order (and by extension terrestrial stability) depends on properly empowered, role-coordinated śakti rather than rivalry among deities.

Geographical context

Kailāsa (Kailāsa-śikhara); Śveta-parvata; Mandara-adri; Nīla-parvata.

Ritual instructions

  • Primary RitualTapas (austerity) as a cosmological instrument; contemplative recognition of Trimūrti-śakti coordination (Trikalā as Brāhmī/Vaiṣṇavī/Raudrī).
  • BenefitClarifies theological hierarchy (para–apara), reduces sectarian rivalry through functional integration, and frames disciplined practice (tapas) as the means to stabilize creation/order—symbolically supporting ‘stability of the world’ through rightly empowered agency.

The narrative frame

  • VarāhaPṛthivī (Dharā) · Pedagogical, doctrinal clarification (siddhānta) with mythic-cosmogonic illustration; conciliatory toward Trimūrti functions while asserting Nārāyaṇa’s supremacy.

The emotional journey

  • Dominant RasaŚānta (with secondary Vīra/adbhuta)
  • Emotional ProgressionInquiry and doctrinal tension (who is supreme) → reassurance through hierarchy and causality → urgency/fear due to Andhaka → wonder at Trikalā’s epiphany → calm resolution through functional distribution and empowerment (sarvagatva) → settled confidence in cosmic order.

Planning a pilgrimage

  • Visit FeasibilityPrimarily mythic/cosmological geography. Kailāsa is a living pilgrimage ideal but access is restricted/variable; the chapter’s mountains function more as symbolic tapas-sites than clearly mappable tirthas in this adhyāya’s presentation.
  • Best SeasonLate spring to early autumn (typical window for Himalayan-region travel, subject to route permissions and conditions).
  • Modern Location NameMount Kailash (Kailāsa) in the Tibet Autonomous Region; associated in broader tradition with the Kailash–Manasarovar area.
  • Related FestivalMahāśivarātri (Kailāsa/Rudra association) and Navarātri (Śakti/Tridevī resonance), though not specified in the adhyāya.

Frequently Asked Questions

The text advances a philosophical clarification of divine hierarchy (para–apara): Nārāyaṇa is presented as the supreme source, from whom Brahmā arises, and from Brahmā, Rudra. It further teaches that cosmic governance is stabilized through coordinated functions—sṛṣṭi, sthiti, and saṃhāra—personified through Trikalā’s three forms, implying that ordered creation and protection are achieved through integrated, role-based responsibility rather than rivalry.

No explicit tithi, nakṣatra, lunar month, or seasonal marker is stated. The narrative uses non-specific temporal cues such as “ekasmin divase” (on a certain day) and “atha kālena mahatā” (after a long time), indicating duration of tapas and gradual intensification of creation rather than calendrical ritual timing.

Although not framed as explicit ecological policy, the chapter links terrestrial stability to cosmological order: creation falters when Brahmā’s “mānasī prajā” does not expand, prompting recognition that effective sṛṣṭi requires a universally operative agency (sarvagatva) embodied by the Brāhmī form. This can be read as an early systems-ethics model where balanced world-formation depends on distributed presence and regulation, aligning Pṛthivī’s concern for coherent order with a cosmic mechanism that sustains the inhabited world.

The chapter references major pan-Indic divine figures (Nārāyaṇa/Viṣṇu, Brahmā/Caturmukha, Rudra/Maheśvara, Gaurī) and the daitya Andhaka as the antagonistic figure motivating divine assembly. No human royal lineages, dynastic lists, or named sages are introduced within this adhyāya’s cited passage.
