Inside Sukta 8

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Soma-streams surge toward Indra’s cherished desire, explicitly to augment his heroic power (vīrya).

  2. Development

The hymn elaborates Soma’s release for divine delight, its swift, charging force, and its radiant clothing with ‘cows/rays’ (gobhiḥ) as a sign of purification and brilliance.

  3. Climax

Soma is hailed as indra-pīta (drunk by Indra) and svàr-vid (finder of the sun-world), joining divine exhilaration with the revelation of light.

  4. Where it settles

The seers ‘take in’ Soma as nourishment, ending in practical boons—progeny and sustaining force (prajām iṣam).

The deity: Soma Pavamāna

  • Cosmic functionMediator of vitality between heaven and earth: purified Soma energizes Indra for cosmic victories, sustains ṛta through sacrifice, and opens the ‘sun-world’ (svàr) as a principle of light and order.
  • Inner significanceThe clarified current of consciousness: purification of impulses into luminous strength, producing inspired clarity (svàr-vid), courage, and generative fullness (prajā, iṣ).

The seer

  • AnuktaThis sukta is transmitted without a named rishi in the received tradition; it belongs to the Mandala 9 Soma-Pavamāna corpus where many hymns are tied more to ritual function than to a clearly preserved author-name.

Frequently Asked Questions

The hymn praises Soma in his purified form (Soma Pavamāna), especially in relation to Indra who drinks Soma and is strengthened by it.

As Soma is filtered and made pure, it flows to Indra’s delight, increases heroic power, and becomes a source of light (svàr), nourishment, and human prosperity.

In Vedic thought, a well-offered and well-purified Soma brings tangible blessings—growth of life (prajā) and sustaining abundance/energy (iṣ) for the community.
