Sukta 8

Mantra 1

एते सोमा अभि प्रियमिन्द्रस्य काममक्षरन् । वर्धन्तो अस्य वीर्यम् ॥

These Soma-streams have flowed toward what is dear—the desire of Indra—enhancing and increasing his hero-power within us.

Mantra 2

पुनानासश्चमूषदो गच्छन्तो वायुमश्विना । ते नो धान्तु सुवीर्यम् ॥

Purifying themselves, seated in the cup, going to Vāyu and the Aśvins—may they establish in us a good and luminous hero-power.

Mantra 3

इन्द्रस्य सोम राधसे पुनानो हार्दि चोदय । ऋतस्य योनिमासदम् ॥

O Soma, purifying, impel within the heart the delight that serves Indra’s fulfillment; take thy seat in the womb of Ṛta, the true foundation of our becoming.

Mantra 4

मृजन्ति त्वा दश क्षिपो हिन्वन्ति सप्त धीतयः । अनु विप्रा अमादिषुः ॥

Ten swift powers cleanse you; seven streams of inspired thought drive you on. Following your movement, the seers enter the ecstasy of illumination.

Mantra 5

देवेभ्यस्त्वा मदाय कं सृजानमति मेष्यः । सं गोभिर्वासयामसि ॥

For the gods’ delight we release you, the blissful one, rushing beyond like a ram in its force; we clothe you with the rays of light and knowledge.

Mantra 6

पुनानः कलशेष्वा वस्त्राण्यरुषो हरिः । परि गव्यान्यव्यत ॥

Self-purifying in the vessels, the tawny-golden one enters the filtering cloths; around the luminous riches he is woven and made ready.

Mantra 7

मघोन आ पवस्व नो जहि विश्वा अप द्विषः । इन्दो सखायमा विश ॥

O bounteous one, flow to us in your purification; strike away all hostile powers. O Indu, enter as our friend and companion within the being.

Mantra 8

वृष्टिं दिवः परि स्रव द्युम्नं पृथिव्या अधि । सहो नः सोम पृत्सु धाः ॥

Flow around as the rain of heaven and as the luminous glory upon the earth; O Soma, set in us the power of endurance and victory in the battles.

Mantra 9

नृचक्षसं त्वा वयमिन्द्रपीतं स्वर्विदम् । भक्षीमहि प्रजामिषम् ॥

You who are the seer of men, drunk by Indra and finder of the Sun-world, we take you in as our nourishment—so that progeny and the force of fulfillment may grow in us.
