Sukta 191

Sukta 1.191

This hymn is an apotropaic (protective) chant aimed at driving away unseen afflictors—understood in many readings as venom, disease-agents, hostile beings, or occult harms that “fasten” onto a person. It names and neutralizes the hidden stings and poisons, and then invokes the rising Sun/Āditya as the great revealer who destroys what works invisibly. The closing tone is antidotal and declarative: the venom is rendered “tasteless,” i.e., powerless.

Inside Sukta 191

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens by identifying the threat as a hidden ‘stinger’—not merely what is visible, but what secretly bites and clings (adṛṣṭa).

  2. Development

It broadens the protection: the unseen attackers are named, exposed, and countered through mantra-force; the logic is that what is brought to light loses its power.

  3. Climax

Sūrya/Āditya rises beyond the mountains as the all-seeing one who destroys the unseen (adṛṣṭahā), turning cosmic illumination into immediate protection.

  4. Where it settles

A decisive antidotal closure: venom is declared ‘without essence’ and rendered ineffective—speech seals the cure and restores safety.

The deity: Apotropaic protective power with explicit Sūrya/Āditya invocation

  • Cosmic functionTo bring what is hidden into the field of order and visibility—dispelling secret harms, breaking the force of poison/affliction, and restoring safe movement and vitality under solar law (ṛta).
  • Inner significanceThe movement from fear of vague, unseen threats to clarity and mastery: awareness (light) dissolves anxiety and obsession, while firm, truth-asserting speech functions as an antidote to inner and outer toxins.

The seer

  • Kutsa Āṅgirasa (traditional attribution; some verses treated as anonymous/atharvanic in style)Āṅgirasa · A prominent Rigvedic seer associated with protective and heroic themes; in later tradition linked with Indra’s exploits and with potent mantra-speech used for overcoming threats.

  • Hymns in RV Mandala 1 traditionally connected with Kutsa (notably Indra-related cycles, attribution varying by Anukramaṇī and recension)
  • Associated in later Vedic memory with mantra-power (vāc) used for protection and victory

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare a clean place and, if available, kindle a small household fire (gārhapatya/aupāsana) or sit facing east.
  • State the intention: removal of adṛṣṭa-doṣa (unseen harm), poison, and fear; invoke Sūrya/Āditya as witness.
  • Recite the hymn (or selected key verses) with steady breath; emphasize the ‘naming’ of the hidden sting and the command that it lose potency.
  • Optionally perform protective gestures: sprinkling water (ācamana/prokṣaṇa) around the person/space; tying a simple protective thread; marking boundaries.
  • Conclude with a short Sūrya invocation and a firm closing declaration of safety and restored strength.

Offerings

  • Water for sprinkling (prokṣaṇa)
  • Ghee or sesame into a small fire (if performed as a homa)
  • Simple oblation of grains (barley/rice) where customary
  • Sun-facing arghya (water offering) at dawn if focusing on Āditya

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a protective hymn that confronts hidden, unseen afflictors—often understood as poison, disease-agents, or hostile forces—and drives them away through mantra and the power of solar revelation.

Because the Sun is portrayed as “all-seeing” and as the destroyer of what works invisibly (adṛṣṭahā). The hymn uses sunlight as a symbol and force of exposure that breaks hidden harm.

Several verses explicitly speak in an antidote style and one verse directly addresses scorpion venom. In practice, it is also applied more broadly for protection from unseen troubles, fear, and sudden afflictions.
