Sukta 1.171
Agastya
Maruts
Triṣṭubh
This hymn is Agastya’s urgent appeasement and invocation of the Maruts—swift storm-powers—asking them to lay aside anger, unyoke their steeds, and turn their force into auspicious help. A tense undertone appears: the singer trembles before Indra’s overwhelming might and seeks right alignment between Indra and the Maruts so that the sacrifice and the community are protected and strengthened. The sukta thus channels fierce divine energy into orderly, beneficent action through prayer, restraint, and proper offering.
Mantra 1
Mantra 2
Mantra 3
Mantra 4
Mantra 5
Mantra 6
The hymn asks the Maruts to calm their fierce energy—set down anger, unyoke their steeds—and become benevolent helpers who protect and strengthen the people.
Indra represents overwhelming power. The seer acknowledges that such force can be dangerous if misaligned, so he seeks harmony between Indra and the Maruts and asks for protection.
It suggests the rite felt inauspicious or wrongly charged. The poet symbolically removes what is harmful and prays for mercy, showing that Vedic ritual includes correction and restoring right order.
