Sukta 171

Mantra 1

प्रति व एना नमसाहमेमि सूक्तेन भिक्षे सुमतिं तुराणाम् । रराणता मरुतो वेद्याभिर्नि हेळो धत्त वि मुचध्वमश्वान् ॥

Toward you with this reverence I come; with the well-shaped word I ask the clear goodwill of the swift Maruts. Rejoicing, O Maruts, with your worthy aids, lay down your wrath and unyoke the steeds—let the forces become calm and ready for right action.

Mantra 2

एष वः स्तोमो मरुतो नमस्वान्हृदा तष्टो मनसा धायि देवाः । उपेमा यात मनसा जुषाणा यूयं हि ष्ठा नमस इद्वृधासः ॥

This is your hymn, O Maruts, full of reverence—fashioned by the heart, set in place by the mind, O gods. Come near to it, consenting in your thought; for you indeed increase by our homage, and in that increase you enlarge our being.

Mantra 3

स्तुतासो नो मरुतो मृळयन्तूत स्तुतो मघवा शम्भविष्ठः । ऊर्ध्वा नः सन्तु कोम्या वनान्यहानि विश्वा मरुतो जिगीषा ॥

May the Maruts, when praised, become gracious to us; and may the bounteous Indra, most capable of bringing true happiness, be strengthened by our hymn. May our desirable growths and all our days rise upward—O Maruts—towards the will to conquer (the lower movements).

Mantra 4

अस्मादहं तविषादीषमाण इन्द्राद्भिया मरुतो रेजमानः । युष्मभ्यं हव्या निशितान्यासन्तान्यारे चकृमा मृळता नः ॥

From this overpowering force I recoil, trembling—O Maruts—out of fear of Indra. The offerings meant for you had become sharp and dangerous; we have set those far away. Be gracious to us; bring relief and right measure.

Mantra 5

येन मानासश्चितयन्त उस्रा व्युष्टिषु शवसा शश्वतीनाम् । स नो मरुद्भिर्वृषभ श्रवो धा उग्र उग्रेभिः स्थविरः सहोदाः ॥

By that power wherewith the illumined rays awaken the minds in the repeated dawnings through their force—do you, O Bull, with the Maruts, establish in us the hearing of truth and fame of the soul: strong with the strong, steadfast, a giver of might.

Mantra 6

त्वं पाहीन्द्र सहीयसो नॄन्भवा मरुद्भिरवयातहेळाः । सुप्रकेतेभिः सासहिर्दधानो विद्यामेषं वृजनं जीरदानुम् ॥

Protect, O Indra, the men who seek to become stronger; be with the Maruts, with wrath driven away. Holding mastery together with the clear-perceiving powers, may we know the true impulsion and the right battle, and the giver whose bounty is enduring.
