Devata

Soma Pavamāna (purified Soma)

Inside Sukta 96

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Soma is hailed as a heroic leader moving at the head of the ‘chariots,’ seeking the luminous herds and bringing auspicious power to his companions.

  2. Development

The hymn develops Soma’s motion through purification: he becomes bright, swift, and victorious; he calls Indra’s might, overcomes want and hostility, and expands the path like the wide freedom of Aditi.

  3. Climax

Soma’s radiances surge in rich streams; the tawny one resounds in the waters and in the jar—fully clarified and ready as the gods’ draught.

  4. Where it settles

The purified Soma is affirmed as a sure bearer who carries the sacrificer onward, securing protection, increase, and right-going movement on the wide path.

The deity: Soma Pavamāna

  • In the VedaSoma is the sacred plant-juice pressed, mixed, and filtered; in the Pavamāna hymns he is a tawny, shining, roaring stream that runs through woolen sieves, enters the jars, and becomes the gods’ beloved draught—especially Indra’s.
  • Cosmic functionHe mediates between human and divine: a consecrated flow that energizes the gods, sustains ṛta (right order), and releases abundance, victory, and inspired speech.
  • Inner significanceThe purification of Soma mirrors inner purification—thoughts clarified into luminous intuition; the “flow” becomes concentrated will, joy, and truth-bearing insight that carries the seeker beyond obstruction.

Famous verses

Verse 9.96.1Sets the hymn’s governing image: Soma as the ‘senānī’ (leader) who advances first, makes things auspicious, invokes Indra’s force, and gives ‘vestures’—a metaphor for fresh powers and luminous coverings gained through purification.Read verse 9.96.1 →

Also by this seer

  • Rig Veda Mandala 9 (Pavamāna section) contains several hymns with uncertain or collective authorship; RV 9.96 belongs to this liturgical corpus.
  • Many Pavamāna hymns function as ritual companions to Soma pressing and are preserved more as priestly sequences than as biographically anchored compositions.

The rite, step by step

  • Press the Soma stalks and collect the expressed juice.
  • Mix with water (and typically milk/curds as prescribed) and guide the stream to the woolen filter (pavitra).
  • Recite/sing Pavamāna verses as Soma ‘runs’ and clarifies, visualizing radiance and victory arising from the flow.
  • Collect the purified Soma in jars (kalaśa), then portion it for offerings.
  • Offer Soma to Indra and allied deities; distribute the remainder as ritual draught to officiants according to rule.
  • Conclude with prayers for wide paths (gātu), protection from hostility (arāti), and prosperity.

Offerings

  • Purified Soma (primary)
  • Water for washing/mixing
  • Milk/curds (common Soma adjuncts, tradition-dependent)
  • Optional ghee and accompanying oblations in the fire as part of the broader Soma rite

Frequently Asked Questions

The hymn praises Soma Pavamāna—Soma in the act of being purified as it flows through the filters and becomes fit to offer to the gods, especially Indra.

It refers to the ritual process where pressed Soma juice is strained through a woolen filter and collected in jars; the hymn also treats this as a symbol of inner cleansing and clarified inspiration.

It asks for victory over hostility and want, auspiciousness and strength (often linked with Indra), and a “wide path” of progress—prosperity, protection, and right movement in life.
