Indra

This hymn is an invitation to Indra to come to the pressed Soma, accept the sweet draught, and enlarge the singer and the well-prepared sacrificers. It recalls Indra’s power to win radiant “sun-world” goods from hostile Asuric forces, asks for protection through ṛta (truth-order), and prays to be carried beyond duritā (hardships/wrongs) into abundant, universally beneficent prosperity.

Mantra 1

या इन्द्र भुज आभरः स्वर्वाँ असुरेभ्यः । स्तोतारमिन्मघवन्नस्य वर्धय ये च त्वे वृक्तबर्हिषः ॥

The enjoyments and powers of possession that you brought, O Indra, rich in the Sun-world, from the Asuric forces—by these, O Bounteous One, increase the singer; and increase also those who, for you, have spread the sacred seat (made the right preparation).

Mantra 2

यमिन्द्र दधिषे त्वमश्वं गां भागमव्ययम् । यजमाने सुन्वति दक्षिणावति तस्मिन्तं धेहि मा पणौ ॥

Whatever enduring share—horse-force, cow-light, unperishing portion—you place, O Indra: set that in the sacrificer who presses Soma and gives the offering-gift; do not lodge it in the trafficker (the spirit of barter).

Mantra 3

य इन्द्र सस्त्यव्रतोऽनुष्वापमदेवयुः । स्वैः ष एवैर्मुमुरत्पोष्यं रयिं सनुतर्धेहि तं ततः ॥

Whoever, O Indra, is negligent, without the law of right working, sunk in sleep, not seeking the gods—by his own goings he falls away. But place the nourishing plenitude of being (rayi) with the one who wins it by true striving; set it there, away from that other.

Mantra 4

यच्छक्रासि परावति यदर्वावति वृत्रहन् । अतस्त्वा गीर्भिर्द्युगदिन्द्र केशिभिः सुतावाँ आ विवासति ॥

Whether you are in the far region or in the nearer, O Vṛtra-slayer—therefore the Soma-presser, with luminous-hair-like rays of speech, calls you here and makes you present through the hymns.

Mantra 5

यद्वासि रोचने दिवः समुद्रस्याधि विष्टपि । यत्पार्थिवे सदने वृत्रहन्तम यदन्तरिक्ष आ गहि ॥

Whether you abide in the shining realm of heaven, or on the summit above the ocean of being, or in the earthly seat, O most Vṛtra-slaying—whether in the mid-region: come here.

Mantra 6

स नः सोमेषु सोमपाः सुतेषु शवसस्पते । मादयस्व राधसा सूनृतावतेन्द्र राया परीणसा ॥

So, for us, in the Soma offerings—O Soma-drinker, lord of force—become intoxicated with your giving; O Indra, by truth-speaking fullness and by the plenitude of being, gladden and strengthen us.

Mantra 7

मा न इन्द्र परा वृणग्भवा नः सधमाद्यः । त्वं न ऊती त्वमिन्न आप्यं मा न इन्द्र परा वृणक् ॥

Do not cast us away, O Indra; be for us the companion in the common ecstasy. You are our help; you indeed are our intimate belonging. Do not cast us away, O Indra.

अस्मे इन्द्र सचा सुते नि षदा पीतये मधु । कृधी जरित्रे मघवन्नवो महदस्मे इन्द्र सचा सुते ॥

With us, O Indra, in the pressed Soma, sit down to drink the sweetness. Fashion for the singer, O Bounteous One, a great help—here with us, O Indra, in the pressed Soma.

Mantra 9

न त्वा देवास आशत न मर्त्यासो अद्रिवः । विश्वा जातानि शवसाभिभूरसि न त्वा देवास आशत ॥

Neither the gods reach you, nor do mortals, O wielder of the stone; by your force you overmaster all that is born. Neither the gods reach you.

Mantra 10

विश्वाः पृतना अभिभूतरं नरं सजूस्ततक्षुरिन्द्रं जजनुश्च राजसे । क्रत्वा वरिष्ठं वर आमुरिमुतोग्रमोजिष्ठं तवसं तरस्विनम् ॥

All the battles, joining together in one movement, have shaped and brought forth Indra—the conquering Man—for sovereign rule: most excellent in will (kratu), choicest in the supreme choosing, irresistible in onset, and the fierce, most forceful, mighty bearer of victorious momentum.

Mantra 11

समीं रेभासो अस्वरन्निन्द्रं सोमस्य पीतये । स्वर्पतिं यदीं वृधे धृतव्रतो ह्योजसा समूतिभिः ॥

The illumined singers rose together in their cry to Indra for the drinking of Soma—Lord of the Light-world—when, firm in his law of action, he grows by energy and gathers to himself the plenitudes of help.

Mantra 12

नेमिं नमन्ति चक्षसा मेषं विप्रा अभिस्वरा । सुदीतयो वो अद्रुहोऽपि कर्णे तरस्विनः समृक्वभिः ॥

The seers with vision bow the rim (the turning limit) toward the Ram, sounding their chant; bright-flamed and without hostility, may your swift-overcoming ones, with their hymns, enter even into the ear—so the hearing becomes a gate for the force.

Mantra 13

तमिन्द्रं जोहवीमि मघवानमुग्रं सत्रा दधानमप्रतिष्कुतं शवांसि । मंहिष्ठो गीर्भिरा च यज्ञियो ववर्तद्राये नो विश्वा सुपथा कृणोतु वज्री ॥

That Indra I call again and again—bountiful, formidable—who holds his strengths always and cannot be turned back. May the most generous, worthy of sacrifice, come by our words; may the wielder of the thunder-force make all paths for our increase in being straight and luminous.

Mantra 14

त्वं पुर इन्द्र चिकिदेना व्योजसा शविष्ठ शक्र नाशयध्यै । त्वद्विश्वानि भुवनानि वज्रिन्द्यावा रेजेते पृथिवी च भीषा ॥

You, Indra, perceive the ancient fronts and by your force you scatter the wrong; O most mighty, O Shakra, to destroy the hostile. From you all worlds take their law: Heaven and Earth tremble in awe before the wielder of the thunder-force.

Mantra 15

तन्म ऋतमिन्द्र शूर चित्र पात्वपो न वज्रिन्दुरिताति पर्षि भूरि । कदा न इन्द्र राय आ दशस्येर्विश्वप्स्न्यस्य स्पृहयाय्यस्य राजन् ॥

Let that Truth-Order guard me, O Indra—hero, wondrous one; like waters, O Vajrin, carry me far beyond the difficult wrongs. When will you grant us the fullness of being—universal in its outpouring, desirable and to be longed for—O King?
