Sukta 75

Mantra 1

युक्ष्वा हि देवहूतमाँ अश्वाँ अग्ने रथीरिव । नि होता पूर्व्यः सदः ॥

Yoke, for you are the best called by the gods, your horses, O Agni, like a skilled charioteer; sit down as the ancient Hotṛ within the seat of our offering-consciousness.

Mantra 2

उत नो देव देवाँ अच्छा वोचो विदुष्टरः । श्रद्विश्वा वार्या कृधि ॥

And for us, O divine Power, speak to the gods—call them near, you who know best; establish in us the faith that makes all true treasures attainable.

Mantra 3

त्वं ह यद्यविष्ठ्य सहसः सूनवाहुत । ऋतावा यज्ञियो भुवः ॥

You—when you are invoked, O youngest, son of Force—become the keeper of the Truth-order; you become worthy of sacrifice, the power that makes our offering straight and luminous.

Mantra 4

अयमग्निः सहस्रिणो वाजस्य शतिनस्पतिः । मूर्धा कवी रयीणाम् ॥

This Agni is lord of the thousandfold, master of the hundredfold plenitude of force; he is the head and seer of the riches—guiding the ascent of our being toward fullness.

Mantra 5

तं नेमिमृभवो यथा नमस्व सहूतिभिः । नेदीयो यज्ञमङ्गिरः ॥

To him—like the R̥bhus to the nave—bow with united offerings; O Angiras, draw the sacrifice nearer, bringing the work of transformation close to its luminous fulfillment.

Mantra 6

तस्मै नूनमभिद्यवे वाचा विरूप नित्यया । वृष्णे चोदस्व सुष्टुतिम् ॥

Now, for him who presses forward toward the Light, urge on with the word—ever-new and many-formed—this well-fashioned praise for the Mighty One, so that the inner force may be increased.

Mantra 7

कमु ष्विदस्य सेनयाग्नेरपाकचक्षसः । पणिं गोषु स्तरामहे ॥

By which force of Agni’s host shall we overcome the Paṇi in the fields of Light—those whose gaze turns away—so that the hidden illuminations may be recovered?

Mantra 8

मा नो देवानां विशः प्रस्नातीरिवोस्राः । कृशं न हासुरघ्न्याः ॥

Let not the radiant herds of the gods, like cows straying to graze, abandon us—let not the inviolable rays leave us lean and diminished.

Mantra 9

मा नः समस्य दूढ्यः परिद्वेषसो अंहतिः । ऊर्मिर्न नावमा वधीत् ॥

Let not the crushing assault of the surrounding haters strike us down—like a wave that smites a boat—when we are in the press of the common conflict.

Mantra 10

नमस्ते अग्न ओजसे गृणन्ति देव कृष्टयः । अमैरमित्रमर्दय ॥

Salutation to your might, O Agni; the human peoples voice you with praise. With your powers, crush the adversary within us—the force that denies and opposes.

Mantra 11

कुवित्सु नो गविष्टयेऽग्ने संवेषिषो रयिम् । उरुकृदुरु णस्कृधि ॥

Will you indeed, O Agni, for our seeking of the Rays, gather for us the plenitude (rayi)? O wide-maker, make for us a wide and free field of being.

Mantra 12

मा नो अस्मिन्महाधने परा वर्ग्भारभृद्यथा । संवर्गं सं रयिं जय ॥

In this great winning of the riches, let no carrying of burdens drive us aside. Win for us the full gathering—win the plenitude together into one completeness.

Mantra 13

अन्यमस्मद्भिया इयमग्ने सिषक्तु दुच्छुना । वर्धा नो अमवच्छवः ॥

Let this evil movement, driven by fear, turn away to another and not to us, O Agni. Increase for us the force that is rich in power and endurance.

Mantra 14

यस्याजुषन्नमस्विनः शमीमदुर्मखस्य वा । तं घेदग्निर्वृधावति ॥

Whosever self-offering has pleased the reverent ones—whether he is imperfect in sacrifice or not—him indeed Agni helps abundantly, fostering his growth.

Mantra 15

परस्या अधि संवतोऽवराँ अभ्या तर । यत्राहमस्मि ताँ अव ॥

Cross over, advancing from the farther enclosure to the nearer; and where I stand, protect those (powers and movements) so that the passage is secured.

Mantra 16

विद्मा हि ते पुरा वयमग्ने पितुर्यथावसः । अधा ते सुम्नमीमहे ॥

We have known from of old, O Agni, thy fostering help as a child knows the succour of the Father. Therefore now we seek from thee thy glad grace—thy power of benevolent protection within us.
