Sukta 14

Mantra 1

यदिन्द्राहं यथा त्वमीशीय वस्व एक इत् । स्तोता मे गोषखा स्यात् ॥

If, O Indra, I could rule the riches even as you, the one lord—then my singer-soul would become a companion of the Rays (cows) within me.

Mantra 2

शिक्षेयमस्मै दित्सेयं शचीपते मनीषिणे । यदहं गोपतिः स्याम् ॥

May I learn for him and may I give to him—O lord of the Shacī, to the wise one—so that I may become a lord of the Rays (cows), a master of illumined possessions.

Mantra 3

धेनुष्ट इन्द्र सूनृता यजमानाय सुन्वते । गामश्वं पिप्युषी दुहे ॥

Your cow of true utterance, O Indra, yields milk to the sacrificer who presses Soma; she milks out the ray-cow and the life-force-horse—nourishing the seeker with growth.

Mantra 4

न ते वर्तास्ति राधस इन्द्र देवो न मर्त्यः । यद्दित्ससि स्तुतो मघम् ॥

O Indra, neither god nor mortal can set a limit to your power of giving. Whatever plenitude you choose to bestow, you grant it the more when you are invoked and affirmed by the hymn.

Mantra 5

यज्ञ इन्द्रमवर्धयद्यद्भूमिं व्यवर्तयत् । चक्राण ओपशं दिवि ॥

The sacrifice increased Indra when he widened and set in right motion the foundation of earth, fashioning in heaven the sure support for the upward working of the soul.

Mantra 6

वावृधानस्य ते वयं विश्वा धनानि जिग्युषः । ऊतिमिन्द्रा वृणीमहे ॥

We, who would win all the treasures of being, choose your protection, O Indra, you who grow ever greater; for by your increase our powers of possession become complete.

Mantra 7

व्यन्तरिक्षमतिरन्मदे सोमस्य रोचना । इन्द्रो यदभिनद्वलम् ॥

In the ecstasy of Soma, Indra overpassed the mid-world and its shining spaces, when he broke open the cavern of Vala—when the luminous mind-force shattered the enclosure of the hidden Light.

Mantra 8

उद्गा आजदङ्गिरोभ्य आविष्कृण्वन्गुहा सतीः । अर्वाञ्चं नुनुदे वलम् ॥

He drove the Rays (the Cows) upward for the Angirases, making manifest what lay hidden in the cave; and he thrust back Vala, the enclosing resistance, so that the Light could return to us.

Mantra 9

इन्द्रेण रोचना दिवो दृळ्हानि दृंहितानि च । स्थिराणि न पराणुदे ॥

By Indra the luminous spaces of heaven are made firm and strongly founded; they stand stable and are not driven away—so the established Light of the higher mind does not collapse in us.

Mantra 10

अपामूर्मिर्मदन्निव स्तोम इन्द्राजिरायते । वि ते मदा अराजिषुः ॥

Like a surging wave of waters that exults, the hymn moves swiftly toward you, O Indra; and your ecstasies shine out and spread—powers of delight made radiant in the being.

Mantra 11

त्वं हि स्तोमवर्धन इन्द्रास्युक्थवर्धनः । स्तोतॄणामुत भद्रकृत् ॥

For you, O Indra, are the increaser of the hymn and the increaser of the inspired word; and for the singers you become the doer of the good—one who shapes the fortunate rightness in the life.

Mantra 12

इन्द्रमित्केशिना हरी सोमपेयाय वक्षतः । उप यज्ञं सुराधसम् ॥

The two tawny, long-maned powers bear Indra—drinker of Soma—toward the sacrifice rich in true abundance; the divine force is drawn to the consecrated work where fullness is offered.

Mantra 13

अपां फेनेन नमुचेः शिर इन्द्रोदवर्तयः । विश्वा यदजयः स्पृधः ॥

With the foam of the waters you rolled away the head of Namuci, O Indra, and you conquered all the hostile contendings—so the luminous power triumphs by a subtle means, not by the gross weapon.

Mantra 14

मायाभिरुत्सिसृप्सत इन्द्र द्यामारुरुक्षतः । अव दस्यूँरधूनुथाः ॥

By thy powers of luminous skill, O Indra, as thou didst strive upward and ascend the heaven of consciousness, thou didst cast down and shake off the Dasyus—those dark obstructers of the soul’s advance.

Mantra 15

असुन्वामिन्द्र संसदं विषूचीं व्यनाशयः । सोमपा उत्तरो भवन् ॥

O Indra, thou didst shatter and disperse the perverse assembly of the unsacrificing, moving in crooked ways; drinking the Soma, thou becamest the higher overcoming power.
