Sukta 46

Mantra 1

एषो उषा अपूर्व्या व्युच्छति प्रिया दिवः । स्तुषे वामश्विना बृहत् ॥

This Dawn, ever new in her ancientness, breaks open wide—beloved of Heaven. I utter the vast praise to you, O Aśvins, for with her coming the greater light in us begins to awaken.

Mantra 2

या दस्रा सिन्धुमातरा मनोतरा रयीणाम् । धिया देवा वसुविदा ॥

You two, wondrous ones, born of the flowing waters, most gladdening to the mind and bringers of the soul’s riches—O gods, find for us the true treasures by the awakened thought.

Mantra 3

वच्यन्ते वां ककुहासो जूर्णायामधि विष्टपि । यद्वां रथो विभिष्पतात् ॥

Your high-crested powers are spoken of upon the wide seat of heaven, when your chariot flies forth with its many radiances. So may your swift movement descend into our field of work and make the path luminous.

Mantra 4

हविषा जारो अपां पिपर्ति पपुरिर्नरा । पिता कुटस्य चर्षणिः ॥

With the offering, the beloved energizer of the waters fills them; O you two heroic ones, the strong drinker—father of the hidden chamber—supports the human journeys. Let that power in us increase the streams of life and open what is concealed.

Mantra 5

आदारो वां मतीनां नासत्या मतवचसा । पातं सोमस्य धृष्णुया ॥

You are the firm support of our thoughts, O Nāsatyas, by the speech that is made true. Drink the Soma by your bold power—so that our mind may stand and act in the rightness of its vision.

Mantra 6

या नः पीपरदश्विना ज्योतिष्मती तमस्तिरः । तामस्मे रासाथामिषम् ॥

That which has brought us forward, O Aśvins—luminous, crossing beyond the darkness—grant that nourishing power to us here, so our being may pass from obscurity into the clear light of right seeing.

Mantra 7

आ नो नावा मतीनां यातं पाराय गन्तवे । युञ्जाथामश्विना रथम् ॥

Come to us as a boat of our thoughts, to carry us to the farther shore. O Aśvins, yoke your chariot—let the right movement bear our mind across what divides it from the wide truth.

Mantra 8

अरित्रं वां दिवस्पृथु तीर्थे सिन्धूनां रथः । धिया युयुज्र इन्दवः ॥

Your oar is broad as heaven; at the ford of the rivers stands your chariot. By the illumined thought the Soma-drops have yoked themselves—so may our inner currents find the right crossing and join to the divine movement.

Mantra 9

दिवस्कण्वास इन्दवो वसु सिन्धूनां पदे । स्वं वव्रिं कुह धित्सथः ॥

O Soma-drops of the heaven, O treasures of the Kaṇvas, at the station of the rivers—where do you seek to set your own hidden enclosure? Reveal it in us, so the concealed light may become our possession.

Mantra 10

अभूदु भा उ अंशवे हिरण्यं प्रति सूर्यः । व्यख्यज्जिह्वयासितः ॥

Then there comes into being the golden radiance for the (sun-)ray; facing it, the Sun becomes manifest—darkness is clearly discerned and driven out by the tongue of flame (the discerning power).

Mantra 11

अभूदु पारमेतवे पन्था ऋतस्य साधुया । अदर्शि वि स्रुतिर्दिवः ॥

Then the path is formed for the crossing beyond—the good-going path of the Ṛta; and the outflowing track of heaven is seen distinctly, a passage opened for the ascent.

Mantra 12

तत्तदिदश्विनोरवो जरिता प्रति भूषति । मदे सोमस्य पिप्रतोः ॥

That very help of the Aśvins the singer seeks and adorns with his response; for in the ecstasy of Soma, those two are the fulfillers who make plenitude grow.

Mantra 13

वावसाना विवस्वति सोमस्य पीत्या गिरा । मनुष्वच्छम्भू आ गतम् ॥

Shining forth in the radiant one (the luminous consciousness), by the drinking of Soma and by the word of affirmation, come to us in the human way, O you two who are powers of bliss and well-being.

Mantra 14

युवोरुषा अनु श्रियं परिज्मनोरुपाचरत् । ऋता वनथो अक्तुभिः ॥

Following your splendor, Dawn moves near to the two who journey around; you win (and open) the truths by the nights—bringing right order even through the dark passages.

Mantra 15

उभा पिबतमश्विनोभा नः शर्म यच्छतम् । अविद्रियाभिरूतिभिः ॥

Drink, you two Aśvins, drink fully; and grant us, fully, your sheltering peace—by your unbroken, unobstructed succors that cannot be held back.
