Adhyaya 67

Verse 1

८-० (3) अत अभ सप्तषष्टितमो< ध्याय: विजयी अर्जुन और उत्तरका राजधानीकी ओर प्रस्थान वैशम्पायन उवाच ततो विजित्य संग्रामे कुरून्‌ स वृषभेक्षण: । समानयामास तदा विराटस्य धनं महत्‌

Vaiśampāyana said: Then, having conquered the Kurus in battle, that bull-eyed hero gathered up King Virāṭa’s great wealth.

Verse 2

वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं-जनमेजय! इस प्रकार बैल-सी विशाल आँखोंवाले अर्जुन उस समय युद्धमें कौरवोंको जीतकर विराटका वह महान्‌ गोधन लौटा लाये ।। गतेषु च प्रभग्नेषु धार्तराष्ट्रेषु सर्वत: । वनान्निष्क्रम्य गहनाद्‌ बहवः कुरुसैनिका:,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये

Vaiśampāyana said: “O Janamejaya, in this manner Arjuna, bull-eyed, having defeated the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra in battle, brought back Virāṭa’s great herd of cattle.” When the Dhārtarāṣṭras had departed or fled scattered in every direction, many Kuru soldiers who had been hiding in the dense forest came out and, in fear, approached Arjuna—worn out by hunger and thirst, and, being in a foreign land, unsettled and confused in mind.

Verse 3

भयात्‌ संत्रस्तमनस: समाजग्मुस्ततस्तत: । मुक्तकेशास्त्वदृश्यन्त स्थिता: प्राउजलयस्तदा,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये

Then, their minds shaken with fear, they gathered from this side and that. At that time they were seen standing with loosened hair and folded hands—worn out by hunger, thirst, and fatigue, and, being in a foreign place, bewildered and distressed at heart.

Verse 4

ऊचुः प्रणम्य सम्भ्रान्ता: पार्थ कि करवाम ते,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये (प्राणानन्तर्मनोयातान्‌ प्रयाचिष्यामहे वयम्‌ । वयं चार्जुन ते दासा ह्ानुरक्ष्या हनायका: ।। वे सब-के-सब अर्जुनको प्रणाम करके घबराये हुए बोले--'कुन्तीनन्दन! हम आपकी क्या सेवा करें? अर्जुन! हम आपसे हृदयके भीतर छिपे हुए अपने प्राणोंकी रक्षाके लिये याचना करते हैं। हमलोग आपके दास और अनाथ हैं; अतः आपको सदा हमारी रक्षा करनी चाहिये!

Bowing down in agitation, they said: “O Pārtha, what can we do for you? We are worn out by hunger and thirst, exhausted, and—being in a foreign place—our minds are unsteady.” And they pleaded: “O Arjuna, we beg you to protect our lives, held close within our hearts. We are your servants, without refuge; therefore you should always safeguard us.”

Verse 5

अजुन उवाच अनाथान्‌ दुःखितान्‌ दीनान्‌ कृशान्‌ वृद्धान्‌ पराजितान्‌ | न्यस्तशस्त्रान्‌ निराशांश्व नाहं हन्मि कृताञज्जलीन्‌ ।।) स्वस्ति व्रजत वो भद्गरे न भेतव्यं कथंचन । नाहमार्तान्‌ जिघांसामि भृशमाश्वासयामि व:,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये अर्जुनने कहा--सैनिको! जो लोग अनाथ, दु:खी, दीन, दुर्बल, वृद्ध, पराजित, अस्त्र- शस्त्रोंको नीचे डाल देनेवाले, प्राणोंसे निराश एवं हाथ जोड़कर शरणागत होते हैं, उन सबको मैं नहीं मारता हूँ। तुम्हारा भला हो। तुम कुशलपूर्वक घर लौट जाओ। तुम्हें मेरी ओरसे किसी प्रकारका भय नहीं होना चाहिये। मैं संकटमें पड़े हुए मनुष्योंको नहीं मारना चाहता। इस बातके लिये मैं तुम्हें पूरा-पूरा विश्वास दिलाता हूँ

Arjuna said: “I do not strike down those who are without protectors, afflicted, destitute, emaciated, aged, or already defeated—nor those who have laid down their weapons, have lost hope for their lives, and stand with joined hands in surrender. Go in safety; may good befall you. You need not fear me in any way. I do not wish to kill the distressed; I give you firm reassurance.”

Verse 6

वैशम्पायन उवाच तस्य तामभयां वाचं श्रुत्वा योधा: समागता: । आयु:कीर्तियशोदाभिस्तमाशीर्भिरनन्दयन्‌,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--जनमेजय! अर्जुनकी वह अभयदानयुक्त वाणी सुनकर वहाँ आये हुए समस्त योद्धाओंने उन्हें आयु, कीर्ति तथा सुयश बढ़ानेवाले आशीर्वाद देते हुए उनका अभिनन्दन किया

Vaiśampāyana said: Hearing his fear-dispelling words, the warriors gathered around. Though hungry, thirsty, and worn out—bewildered in a foreign place—they rejoiced in him, greeting him with blessings for long life, fame, and enduring renown.

Verse 7

ततोअ्र्जुन॑ नागमिव प्रभिन्न- मुत्सृज्य शत्रून्‌ विनिवर्तमानम्‌ | विराटराष्ट्राभिमुखं प्रयान्तं नाशवनुवंस्तं कुरवोडभियातुम्‌,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये

Vaiśampāyana said: Then Arjuna—like a maddened elephant—having scattered the foes and turning back, set out toward the kingdom of Virāṭa. The Kurus were unable to advance against him. Hungry, thirsty, and utterly exhausted, and further unsettled by being in a foreign land, they stood there with loosened hair and folded hands—overcome by fear and helplessness.

Verse 8

उस समय अर्जुन शत्रुओंको छोड़कर--उन्हें जीवनदान दे, मदकी धारा बहानेवाले हाथीकी भाँति मस्तीकी चालसे विराटनगरकी ओर लौटे जा रहे थे। कौरवोंको उनपर आक्रमण करनेका साहस नहीं हुआ ।। ततः स तन्मेघमिवापततन्तं विद्राव्य पार्थ: कुरुसैन्यवृन्दम्‌ । मत्स्यस्य पुत्र द्विषतां निहन्ता वचोडब्रवीत्‌ सम्परिरभ्य भूय:,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये

Vaiśampāyana said: Then Pārtha (Arjuna), having scattered the Kuru host that had rushed upon him like a storm-cloud, returned again toward the city of Virāṭa with the proud, unhurried gait of a rutting elephant—granting life to his enemies rather than pursuing them to destruction. The Kauravas no longer dared to attack him. When the Kuru troops had withdrawn or fled in all directions, many Kaurava soldiers who had been hiding in the dense forest came out and approached Arjuna trembling. Fear had seized their minds; they were worn out by hunger, thirst, and fatigue, and being in a foreign land their distress only increased. With loosened hair and folded hands, they stood before him in supplication.

Verse 9

कौरवोंकी सेना मेघोंकी घटा-सी उमड़ आयी थी; किंतु शत्रुहन्ता पार्थने उसे मार भगाया। इस प्रकार शत्रुसेनाको परास्त करके अर्जुनने उत्तरको पुनः हृदयसे लगाकर कहा -- [८ ॥।। पितु: सकाशे तव तात सर्वे वसन्ति पार्था विदितं तवैव । तान्‌ मा प्रशंसेर्नगरं प्रविश्य भीत: प्रणश्येद्धि स मत्स्यराज:,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये “तात! तुम्हारे पिताके समीप समस्त पाण्डव निवास करते हैं, यह बात अबतक तुम्हींको विदित हुई है; अतः तुम नगरमें प्रवेश करके पाण्डवोंकी प्रशंसा न करना, नहीं तो मत्स्यराज डरकर प्राण त्याग देंगे

Vaiśaṃpāyana said: “Dear child, you already know that all the Pārthas (the Pāṇḍavas) are living near your father. Therefore, when you enter the city, do not speak in praise of them; for if the king of the Matsyas hears it, he may be struck with fear and lose his life.”

Verse 10

मया जिता सा ध्वजिनी कुरूणां मया च गावो विजिता द्विषद्धय: । पितु: सकाशं नगरं प्रविश्य त्वमात्मन: कर्म कृतं ब्रवीहि,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये “राजधानीमें प्रवेश करके पिताके समीप जानेपर तुम यही कहना कि मैंने कौरवोंकी उस विशाल सेनापर विजय पायी है और मैंने ही शत्रुओंसे अपनी गौओंको जीता है। सारांश यह कि युद्धमें जो कुछ हुआ है, वह सब तुम अपना ही किया हुआ पराक्रम बताना”

Vaiśampāyana said: “That Kuru host has been conquered by me, and the cattle too have been won back by me from the foes. When you enter the city and stand before your father, say that the deed was your own.”

Verse 11

उत्तर उवाच यत्‌ ते कृतं कर्म न पारणीयं तत्‌ ते कर्म कर्तु मम नास्ति शक्ति: । नत्वां प्रवक्ष्यामि पितु: सकाशे यावन्न मां वक्ष्यसि सव्यसाचिन्‌,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये उत्तरने कहा--सव्यसाचिन्‌! आपने जो पराक्रम किया है, वह दूसरेके लिये असम्भव है। वैसा अद्भुत कर्म करनेकी मुझमें शक्ति नहीं है; तथापि जबतक आप मुझे आज्ञा न देंगे, तबतक पिताजीके निकट आपके विषयमें मैं कुछ भी नहीं कहूँगा

Uttara said: “The deed you have accomplished is beyond the power of others; I do not have the strength to perform such an extraordinary act. Yet I will not speak about you to my father until you yourself instruct me, O Savyasācin.” (At this time, the Kaurava soldiers—frightened, hungry, thirsty, and exhausted—emerged from hiding in the dense forest and approached Arjuna with folded hands, their distress heightened by being in a foreign land.)

Verse 12

वैशम्पायन उवाच स शत्रुसेनामवजित्य जिष्णु- राच्छिद्य सर्व च धनं कुरुभ्य: । श्मशानमागत्य पुन: शर्मीं ता- मभ्येत्य तस्थौ शरविक्षताड्:,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये

Vaiśampāyana said: Having defeated the enemy host, Jiṣṇu (Arjuna) cut off and recovered all the wealth from the Kurus. Then, coming to the cremation-ground, he approached that Śarmī (the woman there) again and stood—his body wounded by arrows. Meanwhile, when the Kaurava troops had departed or scattered in flight in all directions, many Kaurava soldiers who had been hiding in the dense forest emerged and, trembling with fear, came to Arjuna. Hungry, thirsty, and exhausted, and further distressed by being in a foreign land, they stood before him with loosened hair and folded hands—subdued and seeking protection.

Verse 13

वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--जनमेजय! विजयशील अर्जुन पूर्वोक्तरूपसे शत्रुसेनाको परास्त करके कौरवोंके हाथसे सारा गोधन छीन लेनेके बाद पुनः श्मशानभूमिमें उसी शमीवृक्षके समीप आकर खड़े हुए। उस समय उनके सभी अंग बाणोंके आघातसे क्षत- विक्षत हो रहे थे ।। ततः स वल्रलिप्रतिमो महाकपि: सहैव भूतैर्दिवमुत्पपात । तथैव माया विहिता बभूव ध्वजं च सैंहं युयुजे रथे पुन:,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये तदनन्तर वह अग्निके समान तेजस्वी महावानर ध्वजनिवासी भूतगणोंके साथ आकाशमें उड़ गया। उसी प्रकार ध्वजसहित वह दैवी माया भी विलीन हो गयी और अर्जुनके रथमें फिर वही सिंहध्वज लगा दिया गया

Vaiśampāyana said: “O Janamejaya, victorious Arjuna—having routed the enemy host as described earlier and having recovered the entire herd of cattle from the Kauravas—returned again to the cremation-ground and stood near that very śamī tree. At that time his limbs were torn and wounded by the blows of arrows. Then the mighty ape, blazing like fire, who had been dwelling upon the banner, sprang up into the sky together with the attendant spirits; and the divine illusion that had been arranged likewise vanished. In its place the lion-banner was once more fixed upon Arjuna’s chariot. When the Kaurava troops had departed or scattered in flight in all directions, many Kaurava soldiers who had been hiding in the dense forest came out and approached Arjuna, trembling with fear. Hunger, thirst, and exhaustion had overcome them; being in a foreign land, their anxiety only increased. With loosened hair and folded hands they stood before him—an image of defeat that calls for restraint and discernment in victory.”

Verse 14

विधाय तच्चायुधमाजिवर्धनं कुरूत्तमानामिषुधी: शरांस्तथा । प्रायात्‌ स मत्स्यो नगर प्रह्ृष्ट: किरीटिना सारथिना महात्मना,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये कुरुकुलशिरोमणि पाण्डवोंके युद्धक्षमतावर्धक आयुधों, तरकसों और बाणोंको फिर पूर्ववत्‌ शमीवृक्ष-पर रखकर मत्स्यकुमार उत्तर महात्मा अर्जुनको सारथि बना उनके साथ प्रसन्नतापूर्वक नगरको चला

Vaiśampāyana said: Having restored those war-enhancing weapons—along with the quivers and arrows of the foremost Kurus—to their former place (upon the śamī tree), the Matsya prince set out joyfully for the city, with the great-souled Kirīṭin (Arjuna) as his charioteer. Meanwhile, the Kaurava soldiers who had been hiding in the dense forest emerged in fear—confused, exhausted by hunger and thirst, and further distressed by being in a foreign land—standing with loosened hair and folded hands, their courage broken by what they had witnessed.

Verse 15

पार्थस्तु कृत्वा परमार्यकर्म निहत्य शत्रून्‌ द्विषतां निहन्ता । चकार वेणीं च तथैव भूयो जग्राह रश्मीन्‌ पुनरुत्तरस्य । विवेश हृष्टो नगरं महामना बृहन्नलारूपमुपेत्य सारथि:,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये

Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Having performed a supremely noble deed, Pārtha—slayer of foes—struck down the enemies. Then, once again, he re-tied his hair into a braid and took up the reins of Uttara’s chariot. Great-souled and exultant, he entered the city, resuming the guise of Bṛhannalā as charioteer. Meanwhile, the Kaurava soldiers—hungry, thirsty, and exhausted, their minds unsettled in a foreign land—emerged fearfully from the dense forest where they had been hiding and stood before Arjuna with loosened hair and folded hands, overcome by dread.

Verse 16

शत्रुहन्ता कुन्तीपुत्रने शत्रुओंको मारकर महान्‌ वीरोचित पराक्रम करके पुनः पूर्ववत्‌ सिरपर वेणी धारण कर ली और उत्तरके घोड़ोंकी रास सँभाली। इस प्रकार बृहन्नलाका रूप धारणकर महामना अर्जुनने सारथिके रूपमें प्रसन्नतापूर्वक राजधानीमें प्रवेश किया ।। वैशम्पायन उवाच ततो निवृत्ता: कुरव: प्रभग्ना वशमास्थिता: । हस्तिनापुरमुद्दिश्य सर्वे दीना ययुस्तदा,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--राजन्‌! तदनन्तर कौरव युद्धसे भागकर विवशतापूर्वक लौट गये। उन सबने दीनभावसे उस समय हस्तिनापुरकी ओर प्रस्थान किया। इधर अर्जुनने नगरके रास्तेमें आकर उत्तरसे कहा--

Vaiśampāyana said: After slaying the foes, Kuntī’s son Arjuna—having displayed great, hero-worthy prowess—once again bound his hair in the braid as before and took up the reins of Uttara’s horses. Thus, assuming the guise of Bṛhannalā, the high-souled Arjuna entered the capital cheerfully in the role of charioteer. Then the Kurus, routed and broken, returned in helpless submission. All of them, dejected, set out toward Hastināpura—hungry, thirsty, and exhausted, their minds unsettled as men stranded in a foreign place.

Verse 17

पन्थानमुपसड्म्य फाल्गुनो वाक्यमब्रवीत्‌,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--राजन्‌! तदनन्तर कौरव युद्धसे भागकर विवशतापूर्वक लौट गये। उन सबने दीनभावसे उस समय हस्तिनापुरकी ओर प्रस्थान किया। इधर अर्जुनने नगरके रास्तेमें आकर उत्तरसे कहा--

Vaiśampāyana said: Having come onto the road, Phālguna (Arjuna) spoke. The Kaurava soldiers—frightened in their hearts, confused as men in a foreign land, and worn down by hunger, thirst, and exhaustion—emerged timidly from their hiding places in the dense forest and approached Arjuna with loosened hair and folded hands. After the Kaurava host had scattered and fled in all directions, those who remained returned helplessly and, in a pitiable state, set out toward Hastināpura. Meanwhile, Arjuna, reaching the route to the city, addressed Uttarā.

Verse 18

राजपुत्र प्रत्यवेक्ष समानीतानि सर्वश: । गोकुलानि महाबाहो वीर गोपालकैः सह,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये “महाबाहु राजकुमार! देख लो, तुम्हारे सब गोधन ग्वालोंके साथ यहाँ आ गये हैं। वीर! अब हम-लोग घोड़ोंको पानी पिला और नहलाकर उनकी थकावट दूर हो जानेके बाद अपराह्लकालमें विराटनगर चलेंगे

Vaiśampāyana said: “O prince, look—your herds have been brought back in full, together with the cowherds. O mighty-armed hero, the men here are shaken in mind, worn out by hunger and thirst and by fatigue, and distressed as they find themselves in a foreign land.”

ततो<पराह्नले यास्यामो विराटनगरं प्रति । आश्चास्य पाययित्वा च परिप्लाव्य च वाजिन:,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये “महाबाहु राजकुमार! देख लो, तुम्हारे सब गोधन ग्वालोंके साथ यहाँ आ गये हैं। वीर! अब हम-लोग घोड़ोंको पानी पिला और नहलाकर उनकी थकावट दूर हो जानेके बाद अपराह्लकालमें विराटनगर चलेंगे

Vaiśampāyana said: “Then, in the late afternoon, we shall proceed toward the city of Virāṭa. After giving the horses water and bathing them—so that their fatigue is relieved—(we will go on).”

Verse 20

Vaiśampāyana said: “Let those cowherds, dispatched by you, go quickly to the city and convey the welcome news. Let them publicly proclaim your victory. For the men are hungry, thirsty, and exhausted—bewildered in a foreign place.”

Verse 21

वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--जनमेजय! तब अर्जुनके कथनानुसार उत्तरने बड़ी उतावलीके साथ दूतोंको आज्ञा दी--“जाओ और सूचित करो कि महाराजकी विजय हुई है। शत्रु भाग गये और गौएँ जीतकर वापस लायी गयी हैं!,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये

The enemies have fled, and the cattle have been recovered and brought back.’ Hungry, thirsty, and exhausted—bewildered in a foreign land—when the Kaurava troops had departed or scattered in flight in all directions, many Kaurava soldiers who had been hiding in the dense forest came out and, trembling with fear, approached Arjuna. Fear had seized their hearts. They were worn down by hunger and thirst; and being away from their own country only increased their distress. At that time they were seen standing with loosened hair and folded hands, in a posture of surrender.”

इत्येवं तौ भारतमत्स्यवीरौ सम्मन्त्रय सड़म्य तत: शर्मीं ताम्‌ । अभ्येत्य भूयो विजयेन तृप्ता- वुत्सृष्ट मारोपयतां स्वभाण्डम्‌,क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ता विदेशस्था विचेतस: । जब कौरव-दलके लोग चले गये या इधर-उधर सब दिशाओंमें भाग गये, उस समय बहुत-से कौरवसैनिक जो घने जंगलमें छिपे हुए थे, वहाँसे निकलकर डरते-डरते अर्जुनके पास आये। उनके मनमें भय समा गया था। वे भूखे-प्यासे और थके-माँदे थे। परदेशमें होनेके कारण उनके हृदयकी व्याकुलता और बढ़ गयी थी। वे उस समय केश खोले और हाथ जोड़े हुए खड़े दिखायी दिये इस प्रकार भरतकुल और मत्स्यकुलके उन दोनों वीरोंने आपसमें सलाह करके पूर्वोक्त शमीवृक्षके समीप जा पहलेके उतारे हुए अपने अलंकार आदि शरीरपर धारण कर लिये थे और उनके रखनेके पात्र (भी) रथपर चढ़ा लिये थे

Vaiśampāyana said: Thus the two heroes of the Bharatas and the Matsyas, having consulted together, went again to that śamī tree. Satisfied with their victory, they put back on the ornaments and gear they had earlier set aside, and loaded their own equipment onto the chariot. Meanwhile, the Kaurava soldiers—frightened, hungry, thirsty, and exhausted, and further unsettled because they were in a foreign land—emerged timidly from hiding and stood with loosened hair and folded hands, their fear laid bare by defeat.

Vaiśampāyana said: Then Uttara, in haste, at the instruction of Phālguna (Arjuna), ordered the messengers: “Proclaim the victory of the prince! The enemy has been broken; the cattle too have been recovered—though the foes, defeated, are scattered, hungry, thirsty, and exhausted, bewildered in a foreign land.” Having thus overcome the entire hostile force and seized back all the wealth from the Kurus, the valiant prince of Virāṭa set out joyfully toward the city, with Bṛhannalā as his charioteer.
