Uttarā-Pratigrahaṇa and Abhimanyu–Uttarā Vivāha

Virāṭa-parva, Adhyāya 67

Vaiśampāyana said: “That Kuru host has been conquered by me, and the cattle too have been won back by me from the foes. When you enter the city and stand before your father, say that the deed was your own.”

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights ethical restraint in victory: Arjuna, though the true victor, instructs that the credit be given to the prince before his father. It underscores dharma as protecting another’s honor, avoiding self-glorification, and using power with humility.

After the Kaurava force is routed and the cattle recovered, the scattered Kuru soldiers—hungry, thirsty, exhausted, and terrified—emerge from hiding and approach Arjuna with supplication. Arjuna then tells the prince to report to his father that the prince himself won the battle and recovered the cattle.
