What the texts say

In the Shiva Purana, Kartikeya, the Six-faced Lord, is named as a son of Shiva and Parvati, beloved of both, together with his brother Ganesha. Shiva Purana 7.2.31.22 The Ramayana tells that Kartikeya, born of fire, came into being in the divine Sharavana, bright as fire and the sun. Ramayana 1.36.18 In the Mahabharata, the Krittikas saw the child and, with affection rising in them, nourished him with streams of milk. Mahabharata 13.84.76 The Skanda Purana says he was known as Kartikeya because of the Krittikas. Skanda Purana 5.3.111.23 Later in the Mahabharata, Indra consecrated Skanda, another name of Kartikeya, as commander-in-chief. Mahabharata 3.218.42 The Shiva Purana hails him as Kumara, one of his names, lord of the gods and destroyer of the demon Taraka. Shiva Purana 2.4.11.4 The Mahabharata also pictures Kartikeya mounted on a peacock and bearing his spear. Mahabharata 13.14.143
