Sukta 37

Sukta 4.37

Rishi

Vāmadeva Gautama (traditional attribution for Maṇḍala 4; hymn to the Rbhus/associated powers)

Devata

Rbhus (esp. Vāja, Ṛbhukṣaṇa) as divine artisans; invoked also as devāḥ (luminous powers)

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (probable for RV 4.37; 11-syllable cadence typical of the hymn)

Inside Sukta 37

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct summons: the Rbhus are asked to come near the adhvara (offering/rite) by the godward paths and reawaken the sacrifice for the worshippers.

  2. Development

The hymn develops their identity as bestowers of rayi and vāja and as powerful helpers, with resonances of Indra’s force and Aśvin-like swiftness.

  3. Climax

The central ask intensifies: may the Rbhus bring together plenitude and the ‘steed’ of energy for the peoples—prosperity that is active, victorious, and widely shared.

  4. Where it settles

It ends in expansive praise and a settling request that generosity and increase (maghattva) grow—i.e., that the renewed sacrifice yields sustained auspiciousness.

The deity: Rbhus

  • In the VedaThe Rbhus are exalted as divine artisans and renovators who, through skill (ṛbhu—“craft, ingenious work”), perfect forms, restore what is worn, and make the sacrifice effective and beautiful. They are invoked as bright powers who travel on devayāna paths and cooperate with Indra and the Aśvins in granting aid and prosperity.
  • Cosmic functionThey represent the cosmic principle of transformation-by-skill: renewing creation, sharpening potency, and ensuring that ritual order (yajña) becomes a working channel between human and divine realms.
  • Inner significancePsychologically, the Rbhus symbolize the disciplined intelligence that refines life—turning raw impulse into effective action, and ordinary effort into luminous excellence. Spiritually, they signify the capacity to ‘re-make’ the inner sacrifice: renewing faith, clarity, and the harmonized powers of the being.

The seer

  • Vāmadeva GautamaGautama (Vāmadeva of the Gautama gotra; traditional seer of much of Maṇḍala 4) · A major Rigvedic seer celebrated for visionary hymns that combine ritual precision with inner illumination, especially in Maṇḍala 4.
