Inside Sukta 36

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A wonder is announced: a horse-less, rein-less, three-wheeled chariot moving through the luminous spaces—an emblem of Ṛbhu marvel and divine fame.

  2. Development

The hymn highlights Ṛbhu-born rayi and the god-aided, wide-ranging power of the one aligned with their craft—skill becoming a force recognized by the gods.

  4. Where it settles

It ends with direct, immediate petitions: ‘here’ fashion progeny, wealth, and heroic fame, granting a many-colored vāja that lifts consciousness beyond others.

The deity: Ṛbhus

  • In the VedaThe Ṛbhus are celebrated as extraordinary craftsmen who “fashion” (takṣ) marvels—renewing, multiplying, and perfecting forms—so that their works become worthy of praise in the vidathas (assemblies). Their feats are portrayed as luminous, precise, and divinely sanctioned, turning skill into sacred power.
  • Cosmic functionThey embody the cosmic principle of perfected formation: renewing the world’s instruments (vehicles, vessels, supports of sacrifice) and thereby strengthening Heaven and Earth and enabling abundance (rayi) and victorious force (vāja).
  • Inner significanceThe Ṛbhus signify disciplined mastery—refining the mind and life-force as an artisan refines material—so that aspiration becomes effective, speech becomes true, and inner resources multiply into clarity, courage, and fruitful creation.

The seer

  • Ṛbhus (cycle-poet addressing the Ṛbhus in Mandala 4)Vāmadeva Gautama’s Mandala (Gautama lineage context); individual authorship within the Ṛbhu cycle is traditional and not always fixed · Association with the Ṛbhu cycle of Book 4, extolling divine craftsmanship, transformation, and the elevation of mortal skill into godhood through perfected work and truth.
