Inside Sukta 94

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens with the image of luminous thoughts racing and converging toward the Sun, as Soma begins his purifying flow by choosing the waters.

  2. Development

Soma becomes more ‘seer-like’ (kavīyan), establishing an ordered ‘fold’ of increase—an inner arrangement where powers and insights multiply.

  3. Climax

Soma as kavi carries poetic vision around all worlds like a hero’s chariot, creating divine-recognized glory and manifold new riches for effective power (dakṣa).

  4. Where it settles

A direct prayer asks Soma to bring nourishment, strength, wide light, and prosperity, to gladden the gods, and to drive away enemies/obstructions.

The deity: Soma Pavamāna

  • In the VedaSoma is praised as the self-purifying, luminous draught that rushes through the waters and the filtering fleece, becoming ‘kavi’ (seer-poet) and a maker of wide light, strength, and ordered increase.
  • Cosmic functionHe mediates between gods and humans as the consecrated essence: energizing the gods, sustaining ṛta (order), and distributing vitality, insight, and prosperity through the rite.
  • Inner significanceThe purified Soma symbolizes clarified consciousness: thoughts disciplined by inner ‘waters’ (purifying currents) become luminous, expansive, and victorious over obstruction.
