Inside Sukta 31

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Soma’s purifying streams surge forth—self-mastered and purposeful—bringing a wealth that awakens consciousness.

  2. Development

Prayer intensifies: Soma is asked to grow full and gather virile strength from every side, aligning his power with vāja (plenitude/victory).

  3. Climax

Soma’s presence is invoked at the ‘assembly’ of force—where power, victory, and inspired efficacy converge in the rite.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn closes in intimacy: the worshippers seek Indu’s friendship as the true lord of becoming, armed with his own innate power.

The deity: Soma Pavamāna

  • In the VedaSoma is celebrated as the self-driven, self-mastered (svādhyaḥ) purifying flow (pavamāna) that runs through the filter, bright and potent, bringing riches and inspiration. He is addressed as Indu, the luminous drop, and as lord of bhūvana (becoming/world-order).
  • Cosmic functionMediator of vitality and illumination: Soma’s purified essence strengthens gods and sacrificer, sustains ṛta through invigorating power, and generates vāja—victory, force, and plenitude—within the cosmic and ritual order.
  • Inner significanceThe clarified Soma signifies the refining of consciousness: energies and impulses are ‘filtered’ into clarity, producing awakened wealth (cetanā rayi)—a mind and life-force that are luminous, coordinated, and capable of right action.
