Inside Sukta 32

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Soma streams forth in ecstasy, pressed and advancing into the sacred assembly to bring renown and inspired hearing.

  2. Development

The hymn intensifies Soma’s dynamic imagery—his shining power and swift, creature-like rush—linking his movement to cosmic significance.

  3. Climax

Soma ‘makes both worlds shine’ and ‘takes his seat in the womb of Ṛta,’ presenting purification as enthronement in cosmic order.

  4. Where it settles

A direct petition: Soma should place luminous glory upon the community and the individual, granting increase, medhā, and lasting fame.

The deity: Soma Pavamāna

  • In the VedaSoma in his purified, flowing form—pressed, filtered, and set in motion—described as madacyut (“streaming ecstasy”), shining through the worlds, swift as a driven wild creature, and taking a seat in the ‘womb of Ṛta’.
  • Cosmic functionMediator of vitality and divine inspiration: he energizes gods and humans, sustains right order (ṛta) through consecrated offering, and carries the sacrificer’s praise and intention into the divine sphere.
  • Inner significanceThe clarified current of consciousness: exhilaration disciplined into clarity, inspiration that becomes intelligence (medhā), and inner alignment with Ṛta—truth, rightness, and harmony.

The seer

  • Anukramaṇī-ascribed Soma Pavamāna seerBelonging to the anonymous/collective Soma-Pavamāna seer tradition of Maṇḍala 9, focused on the purification (pavamāna) and ritual-ecstatic theology of Soma in the pressing rites.
