Sukta 9.6
एवा पुनान इन्द्रयुर्मदं मदिष्ठ वीतये । गुहा चिद्दधिषे गिरः ॥
evā́ punāná indrayúr mádaṃ madiṣṭha vītáye | guhā́ cid dadhíṣe gíraḥ ||
एवं पुनान इन्द्रयुर्मदं मदिष्ठं वीतये वहसि। गुहा चिद् दधिषे गिरः॥
The Soma, while being purified, brings the strongest exhilaration for Indra’s enjoyment; even in a hidden place (cave) he establishes inspired utterances.
Soma as the purified current of Ananda-consciousness, aspiring toward Indra (illumined Mind), carries an intensified ecstasy that feeds the divine enjoyment (vīti: the god’s taking of the offering within). This bliss-force penetrates the guhā—the concealed subconscient/heart-cave—and there installs giraḥ, the inspired truth-words: the previously mute depths begin to articulate truth and become capable of mantra-knowledge.
When delight is purified and offered to the higher intelligence, it awakens the hidden layers of the psyche; even the obscure parts can become instruments of truth, speech, and luminous discernment.
Soma purification, Indra-orientation, Hidden cave symbolism, Inspired speech
The seer-voice here is the inner sacrificer: it witnesses the descent of purified Ananda into the ‘cave’ and the consequent birth of true speech—an archetype of how mantra arises when the subconscient is illuminated.
Soma as the clarifying flow that mediates between earth-consciousness and the gods; it becomes the drink of the powers of light, enabling victory over obstruction.
Purified delight (Ananda) that intensifies aspiration and turns hidden nature into a channel of inspired truth.
Soma pressing and purification (pavamāna chants during filtering)

48
4 pādas × 12 syllables (Jagatī norm)
Broad, forward-driving cadence suited to a flowing ‘stream’ image and sustained exaltation.
Supports a continuous ascent-feel: the mind rides a steady wave, aiding entry into deeper layers (guhā) while maintaining luminous intensity (madiṣṭha).
Closes a sequence by stating the fruit of purification: Soma becomes fit for divine enjoyment and implants inspired speech even in hidden places—ritually, the efficacy of Soma in awakening inspired chant and inner assent.
During Soma-yāga sequences when Soma is strained through wool and offered, especially in Pavamāna-stotras/recitations.
Chanting while Soma flows through the filter; mental offering of purified delight to Indra and the gods.
Use as a meditation-chanted affirmation that purified joy can awaken truthful speech from the depths; suitable before journaling, mantra-japa, or contemplative inquiry.
madiṣṭha is a superlative intensifying Soma’s ‘madá’ as highest rapture. guhā́ ‘cave’ is a frequent Vedic symbol for hidden consciousness; placing giráḥ there implies the penetration of inspired speech into concealed layers. √dhā ‘place’ is PIE *dʰeh₁- (cf. Greek títhēmi, Latin faciō is different root; but ‘do/put’ family is ancient).
purification culminating in intensified ānanda (madam madiṣṭha), penetration of inspiration into the subconscient (guhā), vā́c / inspired word as transformative power (giraḥ)
Purification aligns the inner currents to Ṛta so that speech becomes true and effective.
giraḥ established in guhā indicates Satya emerging from concealed layers into expression.
Re-creation of the being: obscurity becomes articulate; the ‘cave’ becomes a womb of mantra.
Proto-Vedāntic/Integral (Aurobindonian) reading: Ananda as causal dynamis for illumination and transformation.
The filtered Soma-stream is the refined current of delight; the wool is discriminating purification; the cave is the hidden subconscient/heart where truth-speech is seeded.
Let purified delight rise and then descend into the heart-cave; listen for truthful inner speech (mantric intuition) rather than discursive thought.
Anāhata (heart-cave) with support from Ājñā (illumined mind/Indra).
Gentle nāḍī-śodhana or equal breathing (sama-vṛtti) 6–6 to ‘filter’ the currents before chanting.
Quietly ecstatic clarity—luminous, inward, and receptive.
Chant slowly; after each recitation pause in silence at the heart, inviting the ‘hidden parts’ to speak only what is true, simple, and luminous.
Use the Rigvedic three-tone framework (udātta/anudātta/svarita) as per śākhā tradition; exact svara marks require a pada-svara text for RV 9.6.9.
Keep udātta as the melodic peak; avoid flattening compounds (indrayuḥ, madiṣṭha). Let caesura fall naturally after vītaye.
punānaḥ: long ā; final ḥ lightly aspirated, indrayuḥ: cluster -dry- kept clear; yuḥ with visarga, madiṣṭha: retroflex ṣṭh cluster; keep i short in -iṣ-, guhā: long ā; soft g, giraḥ: rolled r; visarga audible but not harsh
Clear, flowing, slightly resonant; as if ‘streaming’ through a filter.
