देवानां भद्रा सुमतिॠजूयतां देवानां रातिरभि नो नि वर्तताम्। देवानां सख्यमुप सेदिमा वयं देवा न आयुः प्र तिरन्तु जीवसे॥
May the gods’ benevolent thought set us on the straight path; may the gods’ gift turn toward us and settle in us. We have approached the gods’ friendship; may the gods carry our life forward for living.
Sumati is the gods’ luminous goodwill—right-mindedness descending into the human mind. It sets the being on ṛju-yatāṃ, the straight-going movement: sincerity, clarity, and direct aspiration without crooked ego-motives. The ‘gift’ (rāti) is not merely material; it is the settling of divine force and joy into the system. Approaching ‘friendship’ (sakhya) means entering a conscious alliance with the cosmic powers—cooperation rather than petition. Then āyus is carried forward: life-energy is conserved, uplifted, and extended into a fuller mode of living (jīvase), beyond diminishment.
Progress becomes stable when our mind is set straight by higher goodwill, when higher gifts truly settle within, and when we live in conscious friendship with the powers that uphold truth.
guidance and grace, divine friendship, life-extension as conscious continuity
Gautama’s auspicious hymn emphasizes straightness (ṛju), divine goodwill (sumati), and stable establishment of help (ni-vṛtti).
A practical yoga-mantra: straighten the movement, receive the settled gift, enter friendship with the divine powers, and protect/extend the life-force.
They distribute guidance (sumati), grace (rāti), and protection of life across the worlds.
Rectifying intelligence and stabilizing grace; converting aspiration into enduring inner possession.
Auspicious prayer for guidance and protection; suitable in daily recitation and blessings.

सुमति (su-mati) from √मन् ‘think’ (PIE *men-), ‘good thought’ as guiding consciousness. √ऋज् ‘straighten’ (ṛju) + √या ‘go’ → ṛjū-yatām: ‘go straight’. राति from √रा ‘to give’ (gift). √वृत् (vṛt) ‘turn’ → nivartatām ‘turn toward and settle’. √तॄ/तर् (tṝ/tar) ‘cross’ (PIE *terh₂) → tirantu ‘carry across’.
