Inside Sukta 38

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Indra’s abundance is proclaimed as vast and his giving as all-pervading; the worshippers ask him to increase their luminous strengths (dyumnā).

  2. Development

Indra’s specific powers (śuṣma) are recalled—force that pours forth and acts by conscious sign—by which divine rule supports devotees across heaven and the moving earth-field.

  3. Climax

The hymn turns from praise to direct reliance: Indra’s succouring helps (abhiṣṭi) and shelter (śarman) are invoked as the decisive protection.

  4. Where it settles

It closes with an emphatic prayer to be "sugopāḥ"—well-guarded—resting securely in Indra’s heroic protection.

The deity: Indra

  • Cosmic functionChampion of cosmic order through victory over obstructive powers; releaser and increaser of life-force, rain/impulse, and victorious momentum across heaven and earth.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened will and courageous power in the seeker that breaks inner obstructions, expands capacity, and establishes a protected, luminous state (dyumna) under divine shelter (śarman).

The seer

  • Atri (Ātreya)Ātreya (Atri’s lineage) · One of the great Vedic seers (ṛṣi) associated with inspired vision and the Atri family’s strong Indra-oriented praise; later tradition remembers Atri among the Saptarṣi.
