शुकेन कोपाच्छापो मे दत्तोऽयं जल्पको बटुः ॥ यथानामा त्वयं पक्षी शुको भवति नान्यथा ॥

śukena kopāc chāpo me datto 'yaṃ jalpako baṭuḥ || yathānāmā tvaṃ pakṣī śuko bhavati nānyathā ||

കോപത്തോടെ ശുകൻ എനിക്ക് ഈ ശാപം നൽകി—“വാചാലനായ ബാലകാ! നിന്റെ പേര് ശുകൻ ആകയാൽ നീ പക്ഷിയായി, തത്തയായി മാറും; മറ്റെങ്ങനെല്ല.”
