Sukta 9.101
सोमाः पवन्त इन्दवोऽस्मभ्यं गातुवित्तमाः । मित्राः सुवाना अरेपसः स्वाध्यः स्वर्विदः ॥
sómāḥ pavante índavo ’smábhyaṃ gātuvíttamāḥ | mitrā́ḥ suvānā́ arepásaḥ svādhyàḥ svàrvidaḥ ||
The Soma drops flow in purification for us, knowing the paths; they come as friendly, well-pressed, stainless, self-effective, and finders of the higher light.
The movements of Soma (divine Ananda) are clarified in the inner being and begin to flow toward the seeker. They are “path-knowers” because bliss naturally discovers the right inner passages (gātú) through mind, life, and body when the consciousness is made fit. As ‘friends’ (mitrāḥ) they harmonize and reconcile the divided parts; being ‘stainless’ they are free from mixture with desire and ego. ‘Self-mastered’ indicates an automatic right working (svādhī) of the illumined energy; ‘finders of svar’ means they open the supramental/light-plane in the mind.
When delight is purified of grasping and obscurity, it becomes a guiding intelligence: it reconciles inner conflict, discovers the right way forward, and reveals higher truth-light.
Path-finding, Stainless purification, Friendship/harmony powers, Discovery of light (svar)
Bhṛgus are associated with the fire-knowledge (Agni as inner will) and with forging luminous paths through purification; in Soma hymns they emphasize clarification leading to light (svar).
The Bhṛgu current often joins tapas (ardour) with clarity: the seer’s stance is that purification is not moralism but a technical inner alchemy—pressing, filtering, and releasing Ananda until it becomes light-bearing.
The cosmic delight that is pressed out of existence, filtered through the worlds, and offered to the gods; it nourishes Indra’s illumination and sustains ṛta (right order).
Purified Ananda that becomes a luminous force: it harmonizes, guides the will, and opens higher perception.

4 pādas of ~12 syllables each
Long, even stride with room for descriptive epithets; a ‘processional’ flow suited to purification imagery.
Builds a steady ascent-feel: the listener senses continuous streaming/clarifying, culminating in ‘svar’ (higher light).
Soma filtration: emphasizing Soma as ‘path-finder’ and ‘svar-finder’ for the sacrificer
During Soma pressing (especially morning/midday sequences depending on recension) as Soma is filtered and offered.
Pressing, filtering through wool, collecting in vessels; chanting to consecrate the flow and invite luminous effect.
Use as a meditation-chant during ‘inner purification’ sessions: before study, before pranayama, or when seeking clarity and right direction.
gātu: ‘path, passage’ from √gā ‘go’; vittama: superlative from √vid ‘know/find’ (PIE *weid- ‘see/know’). mitra: from √mi ‘to bind/measure’ (order, harmony); ‘friend’ as power of concord. arepas: privative a- + repa(s) ‘stain/defect’ (semantic: fault, blemish). svār-vid: svar ‘sun-world/light’ + √vid ‘find’—Soma as discoverer of luminous planes.
Ṛta as ‘the way’ (gātu) rightly found, Mitra as harmony/measure, Svar as higher luminous consciousness
Soma as ‘path-knower’ indicates alignment of life-movement with ṛta—finding the true route rather than wandering in desire.
‘Svarvidaḥ’ links Soma to satya as luminous revelation, not mere belief.
The higher light is ‘found’ by purified delight—creation progresses by clarification of consciousness.
Proto-Vedāntic / Integral (Aurobindonian) reading: Ananda as a power that reveals higher planes when purified.
Morning (typical association of Pavamāna flow with awakening clarity)
As the juice clears through the filter, sensations and emotions clear through discernment; the clarified delight becomes a ray-finder of higher consciousness.
Let purified delight guide the ‘right path’ in you; feel a clear, friendly current rising through the mind toward light.
Ājñā (clarity/light) and Sahasrāra (svar as higher plane)
Gentle nāḍī-śodhana (alternate nostril) followed by a smooth, unforced exhale while mentally repeating ‘pavante… svarvidaḥ’.
Quiet, clarified awareness with a luminous uplift (sattvic-anandic).
Before chanting, recall one area of confusion; during chanting, offer it into the ‘stream’; after chanting, sit 2–3 minutes noticing the emergence of the simplest right next step (gātu).
Use Vedic accenting as per śākhā tradition; generally maintain udatta peaks on accented syllables with brief svarita falls; avoid flattening into monotone.
Lean slightly on key words: sómāḥ / pavánta / gātuvíttamāḥ / mitrā́ḥ / svárvidaḥ (exact svara per pada text and recension).
Keep retroflex ṭ/ḍ in gātuvit-tamāḥ crisp (double-t)., Indavo: pronounce ‘in-da-vo’ with clear short a., svādhyaḥ: distinct ‘svā-dhyaḥ’ (dhya not jya)., svarvidaḥ: ‘svar-vi-daḥ’ with light ‘r’.
Clear, flowing, slightly bright timbre as if ‘streaming’ the sound.
