Indra takes form after form, shaping his own body with māyā (creative powers). Thrice he moved around heaven in a moment by his own mantras—guardian against disorder, establisher of ṛta.
Indra, the divine Mind, is not a fixed mental construct; he assumes ‘form after form’—adaptable modes of illumination suited to each plane of the being. Māyā here is not illusion but measured formative power: the capacity of consciousness to build effective instruments (tanū) for action. ‘Thrice around heaven’ indicates swift mastery across the three worlds/planes (often read as earth-atmosphere-heaven; psychologically: physical-vital-mental) within a single concentrated moment (muhūrta) of realization. By his own mantras—self-existent word-powers—he guards against anṛtu (disorder, false rhythm) and establishes ṛta (truth-order).
Higher intelligence is creative and adaptive, forming the right instruments for each situation. When consciousness is aligned with truth through the right word/intent, it can rapidly reorder life across all levels and protect against chaos and falsehood.
Divine transformation, Truth-order (ṛta), Mantric power
A mantra-centric lineage: emphasizes the power of the right word (mantra) to shape reality and establish ṛta; this verse explicitly highlights mantra as operative force.
Viśvāmitra’s vision here reveals Indra as a master of transformation through māyā and mantra—key to Aurobindo’s psychological reading of Vedic gods as powers of consciousness.
Maintains cosmic order by adaptive power and mantric governance; swiftly traverses and encompasses the luminous worlds.
Transformative intelligence capable of re-forming the mental instrument, protecting from confusion, and installing truth-rhythm in thought, speech, and action.
Indra-stotra within Soma sacrifice; praise of Indra’s powers and ṛta-establishment

4×11 (approx.)
Highly kinetic with quick turns (‘rūpaṃ-rūpam’, ‘trir… muhūrtam’); suited to depicting swift transformation and circling mastery.
Energizes mental plasticity; induces a sense of rapid clarification and protective order.
Celebration of Indra’s mastery through mantra and māyā in the Soma context; supports the idea that divine force is guided by truth-order and invoked by right formulation.
During Indra-focused recitations celebrating his might and ordering capacity; could accompany moments of transition/turning in the rite
Stotra/praise to strengthen Indra’s presence and the rite’s order
Use when facing mental rigidity or chaos: chant to invoke adaptive intelligence and truth-rhythm; especially before study, decision-making, or conflict resolution.
bobhavīti: intensive/reduplicated form of √bhū ‘become’, emphasizing repeated manifestation. māyā́ from √mā ‘measure, form’: in RV primarily ‘creative measuring power’. mantrá- from √man ‘think’ + instrumental force: thought that is efficacious. anṛta ‘non-ṛta’ (negation): disorder/untruth. ṛtā́vā ‘ṛta-possessing’ marks Indra as aligned with cosmic order, not merely a warrior.
māyā as creative measure, ṛta vs anṛta, mantra as world-forming cognition
Explicit: Indra is ṛtāvā and anṛtupā—establishes order and guards against disorder.
Truth becomes operative through mantra aligned with satya-intention.
Creation as measured formation (māyā) by consciousness; rapid ordering across planes.
Vedic mantra-ontology; anticipates later notions of śabda-brahman and creative word, without reducing māyā to illusion.
Sky/heaven = illumined mind-plane; circling = encompassing mastery; moment = concentrated tapas; forms = adaptive cognitive instruments.
Invoke adaptive illumination: allow the mind to take the ‘right form’ for truth—discernment, compassion, strength—without losing inner order.
Ajñā (illumined mind) with Sahasrāra (heavenly plane)
Brisk-energetic 3 rounds of bhastrikā (if suitable) to break rigidity, then settle into slow nasal breathing while mentally repeating ‘ṛtāvā’ on exhale.
Clear, plastic, protected; quick reordering insight.
Chant once with vigor. Then sit and watch thoughts: whenever disorder arises, silently repeat ‘anṛtupā ṛtāvā’ and feel a ‘triple’ alignment—body, life-force, mind—coming into one rhythm.
Keep a lively triṣṭubh flow; emphasize the reduplication ‘rūpaṃ-rūpam’ with crisp repetition; exact svara requires accent-marked saṃhitā.
Let ‘rūpaṃ-rūpam’ be articulate and bright; slightly quicken through ‘trir… muhūrtam’; land firmly on ‘anṛtupā ṛtāvā’ as a sealing cadence.
rūpaṃ-rūpam: nasal ‘ṃ’ before r; keep both ‘ū’ long, bobhavīti: articulate ‘bh’ aspirate; long ‘ī’, māyāḥ: long ‘ā’; visarga soft, tanvam: dental ‘t’; ‘nv’ cluster clear, muhūrtam: long ‘ū’; retroflex ‘ṭ’? not here; keep ‘rt’ cluster crisp, mantrair: ‘tr’ cluster; avoid inserting vowel, anṛtupā: retroflex ‘ṛ’; dental ‘t’; long ‘ā’, ṛtāvā: retroflex ‘ṛ’; long ‘ā’
Bright, incisive, mentally awakening; clean consonants.
