Sukta 10.78
उषसां न केतवोऽध्वरश्रियः शुभंयवो नाञ्जिभिर्व्यश्वितन् । सिन्धवो न ययियो भ्राजदृष्टयः परावतो न योजनानि ममिरे ॥
uṣásāṃ na ketávo’dhvara-śriyàḥ śubhaṃ-yávo nā́ñji-bhir vy-àśvitan | síndhavo na yayíyo bhrā́ja-dṛṣṭayaḥ parāváto na yójanāni mamire ||
The Maruts, splendid as the banners of the Dawns, beautify the sacrifice and spread out in shining array. They move like rivers, swift-travelling, with flashing spears, measuring great distances as if from a far beyond.
The Maruts are the dynamic life-powers (prāṇic storm-forces) made luminous by higher illumination (Uṣas). They expand through the inner yajña as bright impulsions that clear the path (adhvara) and carry the seeker forward. Like rivers of force they stream through the being; their “spears” are keen discriminations and decisive energies that pierce resistance, and they “measure distances” by opening successive ranges of consciousness from the supraconscient (parāvat).
When illumination dawns, the right forces of life become allies of the soul: they spread clarity, move steadily like a current, and help consciousness traverse what once felt impossibly distant. True progress is an ordered expansion of energy guided by light.
Luminous expansion, Journey and measure, Adhvara splendour
The anonymity itself suits the Marut-force: an impersonal surge of inspired energies rather than a personal confession. The seer-stance is that of witnessing the luminous movements that aid the inner sacrifice.
Storm-gods who accompany Indra; they marshal the atmospheric forces, rend the coverer, and widen the spaces for rain/light.
Dynamic, purified life-energies that, when illumined, become disciplined allies of the soul: they intensify aspiration, break inertia, and expand the field of consciousness.
To widen the field of the sacrifice (adhvara) by luminous expansion and far-reaching movement; supports the ‘journey’ (yāman) motif of the rite

4 pādas; likely 11 syllables each (Triṣṭubh) though some cadence suggests possible Jagatī influence
Driving, expansive, and forward-thrusting; suited to describing spread, flow, and traversal.
Energizes and widens attention; evokes a feeling of ‘moving onward’ through inner spaces with luminous force.
To widen the field of the sacrifice (adhvara) by luminous expansion and far-reaching movement; supports the ‘journey’ (yāman) motif of the rite
Marut/Indra-associated stotras in Soma-yajña settings; also as praise in general offerings to the storm-powers
Recitation to invoke the Maruts’ aid—strength, protection, and right impulsion for the rite’s successful ‘journey’ (adhvara).
Use before demanding work or sādhanā sessions to consecrate energy: visualize luminous currents spreading through the body-mind and clearing obstacles.
uṣas ‘dawn’ (PIE *h₂ews-). ketu ‘banner/sign’ (also ‘light-sign’). śrī ‘splendour’. añji ‘ornament/ointment’ from √añj ‘anoint, smear’ (PIE *h₂engʷ-). √aśv ‘to speed like a horse’ denominative. √mā ‘measure’ in mamire (perfect/middle).
Expansion of consciousness (vi-), Measurement of the path (mā/yojana as stages of inner progress)
The ‘measuring of distances’ images Ṛta as orderly, staged unfolding of consciousness.
Truth as luminous indication (ketu) guiding force-movements.
Expansion from the ‘beyond’ into the manifest—higher light impressing its order upon life-forces.
Proto-Vedāntic / integral yogic reading (Aurobindo: ascent to higher planes; life-force as instrument of the Spirit).
dawn
Illumined prāṇa streams through the nāḍī-like currents of the inner being; sharp discernment pierces subconscient resistance; progress is mapped as successive inner ‘distances’.
Invite illumined life-force to align with the inner sacrifice; feel energies spreading as ordered currents.
Anāhata to Viśuddha (expansion + clarity of expression/force)
Moderate ujjāyī or 4-4-6 breathing while visualizing river-like flow upward and outward.
Energized wideness (bṛhat) with alert discrimination.
Before action, inwardly ‘consecrate the Maruts’: ask that every impulse become luminous, swift, and obedient to the higher Light; then act without haste but with force.
Mixed udātta/anudātta with svarita on sandhi; requires śākhā-specific notation for exact contour.
Keep udātta syllables clear and slightly lifted; avoid flattening compounds like adhvaraśriyaḥ and bhrājadṛṣṭayaḥ.
uṣasāṃ: keep retroflex ṣ crisp, ketavo: light ‘e’, avoid diphthong, adhvaraśriyaḥ: split mentally ad-hva-ra-śri-yaḥ, bhrājadṛṣṭayaḥ: bhrā-jad-ṛṣ-ṭa-yaḥ with clear ṛ, parāvato: long ā in rā
Bright, forward, and steady (as if ‘flowing’).
