Sukta 1.2
कवी नो मित्रावरुणा तुविजाता उरुक्षया । दक्षं दधाते अपसम् ॥
kavī nó mitrā́váruṇā tuvijā́tā urukṣáyā | dákṣaṃ dadhāte apásam ||
Mitra and Varuṇa, the two sages, widely born and dwelling in vast spaces, place in us dakṣa for the accomplishment of works.
The divine pair are themselves kavī—seer-powers—who can install in the human being a discerning formative capacity (dakṣa). This dakṣa is not mere skill; it is the intelligence that shapes the sacrifice’s activities (apas) into effective soul-work, coordinated with ṛta and protected by vastness (uru-kṣaya).
True effectiveness comes from inner discernment rooted in wisdom and wideness; when consciousness enlarges, action becomes rightly formed and fruitful.
Ṛta-establishment, Inner sacrifice, Harmony-and-vastness, Power of right action (apas)
A seer-line that repeatedly asks the gods for dhī, dakṣa, and kratu—core inner instruments for the Vedic yoga of transformation.
Here the seer moves from purification (pūta) and truth-order (ṛta) to capacity (dakṣa) and execution (apas): a progression from inner alignment to effective transformation.
Cosmic sovereigns who see and uphold order; their wideness supports the worlds and their wisdom guides right formation.
They bestow a stable wideness and a precise discernment so that inner works become coherent, protected, and effective.
Mitra–Varuṇa invocations for right performance of sacrifice and protection of the rite

3 × 8
Balanced and instructive; the first pāda names the seer-powers, the second expands their wideness, the third lands on the gift (dakṣa) for work (apas).
Produces a widening-then-grounding movement: expansion of consciousness followed by a settling into competent action.
Invocatory use in soma-liturgies and daily offerings (general Mitra-Varuṇa āhuti context); supports establishment of ṛta (right order) for successful sacrifice as inner and outer act.
Before/within sequences where correct performance and faultless execution are emphasised
Invocation for competence and effective completion of offerings/recitations
Chant before work sessions, service, or creative projects as an inner consecration for ‘right formation’ and steady execution.
Key roots: √kav (in Vedic usage ‘to see/know poetically’, kaví = seer) giving ‘kavī’ (dual). √dhā ‘to place/establish’ → dadhāte (3rd pl. middle, ‘they establish for themselves/for the subject’ nuance of inward establishment). dakṣá- from √dakṣ/√daś (Vedic semantic field: ability, competence, discerning skill); functions as the organizing intelligence-will required for ṛta-aligned action. áp-as (n.) ‘work, sacred action’ from √āp/√ap ‘to attain, work toward, obtain’ (Vedic: effective act/operation), hence apásam (acc. sg.) ‘the work (to be accomplished)’.
Ṛta (cosmic order as right law and right movement), Satya (truth as foundation of effective action), Dakṣa (intelligent will/skill in manifestation)
Dakṣa is the practical intelligence of ṛta—how truth becomes method and form in action.
Seerhood (kavi) implies truth-seeing; dakṣa is truth-applied.
Formation: the cosmos and the inner life are built by right discernment shaping works.
Vedic psychology leading toward karma-yoga of consecrated action; dakṣa as formative intelligence akin to buddhi refined by truth.
Morning widening into day (symbolic of expanding consciousness for action)
Sky/ocean vastness = inner wideness and stability; seers = intuitive faculties; works = disciplined movements of nature transformed into soul-action.
Enter wideness (uru-kṣaya) first; then ask for dakṣa: the quiet, exact intelligence that knows the next right step.
anāhata (wideness) supporting maṇipūra (effective work)
4-4-6 breathing (inhale-hold-exhale) to stabilise; mentally place ‘uru-kṣayā’ on the exhale to widen
Widened, capable, quietly energetic; action without haste.
If work feels chaotic, pause and widen attention around the task; invite dakṣa to organise priorities; act stepwise as offering (apas as yajña).
Gāyatrī recitation; keep compounds (tuvi-jātā, uru-kṣayā) clearly articulated with proper sandhi flow.
Slightly broaden tone on ‘uru-kṣayā’ to mirror wideness; land firmly on ‘dakṣaṃ dadhāte’ with grounded pitch.
(kavī): long ‘ī’, (tuvi-jātā): clear ‘j’, long ‘ā’, (uru-kṣayā): ‘kṣ’ conjunct; long final ‘ā’, (dakṣaṃ): nasal anusvāra audible but light, (apasam): short vowels, crisp ‘p’
Widened resonance, then firm articulation; steady and confident.
