The hymn opens by projecting the poet’s songs (giraḥ) outward to Indra as messengers that reach him and call him near.
Indra is asked to return/turn toward the ritual (āvṛ) and drink the pressed Soma—explicitly ‘for us’—including Soma mixed with milk and barley.
The stuti itself is treated as efficacious: properly aimed speech compels divine attention and makes Indra’s presence actionable as avas (help).
It concludes with a traditional identity-marked invocation—‘we Kuśikas, craving succor’—sealing the request in lineage and need while fixing the goal: Indra’s Soma-drinking and aid.
आवृते सोमपीतये (āvṛte somapītaye)गवाशिरं यवाशिरं (gavāśiraṃ yavāśiraṃ)कुशिकासो अवस्यवः (kuśikāso avasyavaḥ)Saumya / Indra-Soma (Ritual praise; AV 20 is largely Rigvedic material used liturgically)
Indra’s arrival and participation in the Soma-drink, resulting in tangible support—strength, victory, and prosperity—for the patrons.
Ritual specialists and patrons using AV 20 liturgically (Soma-related recitation), and households/kings seeking Indra’s aid framed through Soma-invitation praise.
Indra is the paradigmatic Vedic warrior and Soma-drinker: the power of victorious force, leadership, and the capacity to make aid (avas) present when properly praised and offered Soma.
To “turn” Indra back to the ritual space and secure his Soma-drinking, so that his invigorated power manifests as aid, strength, and winning for the sacrificer/community.
During Soma-related observances, or at a chosen auspicious time when seeking Indra’s support (e.g., before contest, campaign, or communal rite).
Soma (pressed drink)
Press Soma according to rite; prepare a portion as admixture-Soma: blend with milk (gava-āśir) and with barley/yava (yavāśir) as indicated by the hymn’s offering language; present in a clean cup for invitation and offering.
It is a liturgical Indra-hymn that invites Indra to come back/turn toward the rite and drink the pressed Soma, so his power becomes active help for the patrons.
Milk and barley are classic strengthening admixtures for the Soma offering; the verses use them to describe a rich, inviting draught meant to please and invigorate Indra.
In content it is largely Rigvedic Indra-stuti material, preserved in Atharvaveda Kāṇḍa 20 for liturgical use; it functions more as ritual praise and invitation than as a medical or hostile charm.
