I spoke to the virtuous Lakshmana, who was holding arrows, bow and sword in his hand and keeping awake completely for the protection of his brother.
In times of uncertainty, the righteous rely on vigilant guardianship; devotion expresses itself as readiness to protect.
Models sevā as alertness and responsibility; encourages disciplined vigilance (apramāda).
Wakefulness as metaphor for pramāda-rahitatā (freedom from negligence) in guarding dharma.
Jāgrat (waking state) as a charged word; here literal vigilance, faintly resonant with the triad jāgrat-svapna-suṣupti in later Upaniṣadic reflection.
Rātri (implied by wakefulness/guard)
Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa 2.20–2.21 (Lakṣmaṇa’s fierce protective stance for Rāma); Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa 3.15–3.16 (Lakṣmaṇa’s guarding role in the forest)
Kṣatriya ideal in Dharmaśāstra literature (general)
Ayodhyākāṇḍa: Lakṣmaṇa’s constant attendance and readiness during crisis episodes
Anuṣṭup (śloka)
Commanding
Uccāraṇa with tejas (firm, slightly elevated)
Dharma appears as fraternal responsibility: Lakṣmaṇa’s righteousness is expressed through vigilant protection of his elder brother, placing duty above personal comfort.
Guha describes the night when Lakṣmaṇa remains awake with weapons, guarding Rāma during their forest journey, and Guha speaks to him.
Lakṣmaṇa’s steadfast loyalty and alert guardianship—discipline, readiness, and selfless service.
