अध्यात्मम्। य इमे द्यावापृथिवी जजान यो द्रापिं कृत्वा भुवनानि वस्ते । यस्मिन् क्षियन्ति प्रदिशः षडुर्वीर्याः पतङ्गो अनु विचाकशीति तस्य देवस्य। क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

Adhyātma. He who begat these Heaven and Earth, who, having made a mantle, enwraps the worlds; in whom the six quarters abide—of wide-reaching might—whom the winged one follows as he shines abroad: of that god—when wroth—this is the guilt, for him who, knowing thus, wrongs a learned Brahmin. Up, make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: against the brahma-injurer loose forth the nooses.

यस्माद् वाता ऋतुथा पवन्ते यस्मात् समुद्रा अधि विक्षरन्ति तस्य देवस्य। क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

From whom the winds blow forth in ordered season, from whom the oceans pour their streams abroad—of that god, when angered, this is the offence: he who, knowing thus, wrongs a learned Brahmin. Up, make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: against the brahma-injurer loose forth the nooses.

यो मारयति प्राणयति यस्मात् प्राणन्ति भुवनानि विश्वा तस्य देवस्य। क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

He who slays and he who makes to live, from whom all worlds draw breath—of that god, when angered, this is the offence: he who, knowing thus, wrongs a learned Brahmin. Up, make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: against the brahma-injurer loose forth the nooses.

यः प्राणेन द्यावापृथिवी तर्पयत्यपानेन समुद्रस्य जठरं यः पिपर्ति तस्य देवस्य क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

He who with prāṇa refreshes Heaven and Earth, who with apāna fills the ocean’s belly—of that god, when angered, this is the offence: he who, knowing thus, wrongs a learned Brahmin. Up, make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: against the brahma-injurer loose forth the nooses.

यस्मिन् विराट् परमेष्ठी प्रजापतिरग्निर्वैश्वानरः सह पङ्क्त्या श्रितः । यः परस्य प्राणं परमस्य तेज आददे तस्य देवस्य। क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

In whom Virāj, Parameṣṭhin, Prajāpati, and Agni Vaiśvānara, together with Paṅkti, are established; who took to himself the breath of the Beyond, the splendour of the Highest—of that god, when angered, this is the offence: he who, knowing thus, wrongs a learned Brahmin. यस्मिन् षडुर्वीः पञ्च दिशो अधि श्रिताश्चतस्र आपो यज्ञस्य त्रयोऽक्षराः । यो अन्तरा रोदसी क्रुद्धश्चक्षुषैक्षत तस्य देवस्य । क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

In whom are set the six broad regions; on whom the five directions rest; (in whom are) the four Waters; (in whom) of Sacrifice the three imperishable syllables:—He who, wrathful, looked with his eye between the two worlds—of that God. This is the offence against that wrathful God, whoso thus wrongs a knowing Brahmin. Make him quake, O Rohita; waste him away; against the Brahmin-hurter loose back the nooses.

यो अन्नादो अन्नपतिर्बभूव ब्रह्मणस्पतिरुत यः । भूतो भविष्यद् भुवनस्य यस्पतिस्तस्य देवस्य । क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

He who became the Eater of food, the Lord of food; who is Lord of brahman also; who is master of what hath been and what shall be, the lord of the world of being—of that God. This is the offence against that wrathful God, whoso thus wrongs a knowing Brahmin. Make him quake, O Rohita; waste him away; against the Brahmin-hurter loose back the nooses.

अहोरात्रैर्विमितं त्रिंशदङ्गं त्रयोदशं मासं यो निर्मिमीते तस्य देवस्य । क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

He who by day-and-night measured out the month of thirty parts, yea even the thirteenth month, who meted it forth—of that God. This is the offence against that wrathful God, whoso thus wrongs a knowing Brahmin. Make him quake, O Rohita; waste him away; against the Brahmin-hurter loose back the nooses.

कृष्णं नियानं हरयः सुपर्णा अपो वसाना दिवमुत् पतन्ति । त आववृत्रन्त्सदनादृतस्य तस्य देवस्य । क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

The tawny, fair-winged (ones), clothed in Waters, fly up to heaven, (breaking) the black down-leading constraint. They have encompassed (it) from the seat of ṛta—of that God. This is the offence against that wrathful God, whoso thus wrongs a knowing Brahmin. Make him quake, O Rohita; waste him away; against the Brahmin-hurter loose back the nooses.

यत् ते चन्द्रं कश्यप रोचनावद् यत् संहितं पुष्कलं चित्रभानु। यस्मिन्त्सूर्या आर्पिताः सप्त साकं तस्य देवस्य । क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

That moon of thine, O Kaśyapa, radiant; that well-compacted, abundant, bright-flamed (orb), wherein the seven suns are set together—of that God. This is the offence against that wrathful God, whoso thus wrongs a knowing Brahmin. Make him quake, O Rohita; waste him away; against the Brahmin-hurter loose back the nooses.

बृहदेनमनु वस्ते पुरस्ताद् रथंतरं प्रति गृह्णाति पश्चात्। ज्योतिर्वसाने सदमप्रमादं तस्य देवस्य। क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

With Bṛhat he invests him; in front, Rathantara he takes to meet him from behind. Clothed in light, ever vigilant, (is) that god’s power. This is the offence against that god when wrathful—whoso thus overmasters a knowing Brahmin. Up, make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: against the brahma-slayer loose forth the nooses.

बृहदन्यतः पक्ष आसीद् रथंतरमन्यतः सबले सध्रीची । यद् रोहितमजनयन्त देवास्तस्य देवस्य। क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

Bṛhat was the wing on one side, Rathantara on the other—conjoined, with strength, moving together—when the gods brought Rohita to birth. This is the offence against that god when wrathful—whoso thus overmasters a knowing Brahmin. Up, make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: against the brahma-slayer loose forth the nooses.

स वरुणः सायमग्निर्भवति स मित्रो भवति प्रातरुद्यन्। स सविता भूत्वान्तरिक्षेण याति स इन्द्रो भूत्वा तपति मध्यतो दिवं तस्य देवस्य। क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

He becomes Varuṇa; in the evening he becomes Agni; rising in the morning he becomes Mitra. Having become Savitar he fares through the mid-air; having become Indra he burns from the midst of heaven. This is the offence against that god when wrathful—whoso thus overmasters a knowing Brahmin. Up, make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: against the brahma-slayer loose forth the nooses.

सहस्राह्ण्यं वियतावस्य पक्षौ हरेर्हंसस्य पततः स्वर्गम्। स देवान्त्सर्वानुरस्युपदद्य संपश्यन् याति भुवनानि विश्वा तस्य देवस्य। क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

A thousand-day might are the wings of the wide-stretching—of Hari’s haṃsa flying heavenward. Setting all the gods within his breast, surveying, he goes through all the worlds. This is the offence against that god when wrathful—whoso thus overmasters a knowing Brahmin. Up, make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: against the brahma-slayer loose forth the nooses.

अयं स देवो अप्स्व१न्तः सहस्रमूलः पुरुशाको अत्त्रिः । य इदं विश्वं भुवनं जजान तस्य देवस्य । क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

This is that god within the waters—thousand-rooted, man-formed, a devourer—who begat this whole world of being. This is the offence against that god when wrathful—whoso thus overmasters a knowing Brahmin. Up, make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: against the brahma-slayer loose forth the nooses.

शुक्रं वहन्ति हरयो रघुष्यदो देवं दिवि वर्चसा भ्राजमानम्। यस्योर्ध्वा दिवं तन्व१स्तपन्त्यर्वाङ् सुवर्णैः पटरैर्वि भाति तस्य देवस्य । क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

The bright bay steeds, swift-gliding, bear the God, in heaven resplendent with his holy lustre. Whose forms, uprising, heat the sky; and hitherward he shineth out with golden mantles—of that God. This is the offence against the wrathful One: whoso thus a knowing Brahman wrongs. Up, make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: upon the Brahman-hurter loose back the nooses.

येनादित्यान् हरितः सम्वहन्ति येन यज्ञेन बहवो यन्ति प्रजानन्तः । यदेकं ज्योतिर्बहुधा विभाति तस्य देवस्य । क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

Whereby the green-tawny steeds convey the Ādityas; whereby, by sacrifice, many—knowing—attain their course; that one Light which shineth forth in manifold wise—of that God. This is the offence against the wrathful One: whoso thus a knowing Brahman wrongs. Up, make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: upon the Brahman-hurter loose back the nooses.

सप्त युञ्जन्ति रथमेकचक्रमेको अश्वो वहति सप्तनामा । त्रिनाभि चक्रमजरमनर्वं यत्रेमा विश्वा भुवनाधि तस्थुस्तस्य देवस्य । क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

Seven yoke the one-wheeled car; one Horse bears it, of seven names. The wheel, three-naved, unaging, never slack, whereon these all the worlds are set and stand—of that God. This is the offence against the wrathful One: whoso thus a knowing Brahman wrongs. Up, make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: upon the Brahman-hurter loose back the nooses.

अष्टधा युक्तो वहति वह्निरुग्रः पिता देवानां जनिता मतीनाम्। ऋतस्य तन्तुं मनसा मिमानः सर्वा दिशः पवते मातरिश्वा तस्य देवस्य । क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

Eightfold harnessed, the fierce Bearer bears: the Father of the Gods, begetter of our holy thoughts. Measuring with mind the thread of ṛta, Mātariśvan blows through all the quarters—of that God. This is the offence against the wrathful One: whoso thus a knowing Brahman wrongs. Up, make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: upon the Brahman-hurter loose back the nooses.

संयञ्चं तन्तुं प्रदिशोऽनु सर्वा अन्तर्गायत्र्याममृतस्य गर्भे तस्य देवस्य । क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

The thread drawn tight along all the quarters—within the Gāyatrī, in the womb of immortality—of that God. This is the offence against the wrathful One: whoso thus a knowing Brahman wrongs. Up, make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: upon the Brahman-hurter loose back the nooses.

निम्रुचस्तिस्रो व्युषो ह तिस्रस्त्रीणि रजांसि दिवो अङ्ग तिस्रः । विद्मा ते अग्ने त्रेधा जनित्रं त्रेधा देवानां जनिमानि विद्म तस्य देवस्य । क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

Three are the downward darkenings, three the dawn-breakings; three, forsooth, the regions—three of heaven, O surely. We know, O Agni, thy threefold birthplace; threefold we know the births of the Gods—of that God. This is the offence against the wrathful One: whoso, thus knowing, injureth a learned Brahman. Up—make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: in requital loose forth the nooses upon the Brahma-hurter.

वि य और्णोत् पृथिवीं जायमान आ समुद्रमदधादन्तरिक्षे तस्य देवस्य । क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

He who, being born, overspread the Earth, who set the Ocean in the mid-air—of that God: this is the offence against the wrathful One, whoso, thus knowing, injureth a learned Brahman. Up—make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: in requital loose forth the nooses upon the Brahma-hurter.

त्वमग्ने क्रतुभिः केतुभिर्हितो३र्कः समिद्ध उदरोचथा दिवि। किमभ्याऽर्चन् मरुतः पृश्निमातरो यद् रोहितमजनयन्त देवास्तस्य देवस्य। क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

Thou, Agni, set with powers and radiant signs, a flame well-kindled, hast shone forth in heaven. Wherefore did the Maruts, Pṛśni’s sons, hymn on, when the Gods brought Rohita to birth—of that God? This is the offence against the wrathful One: whoso, thus knowing, injureth a learned Brahman. Up—make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: in requital loose forth the nooses upon the Brahma-hurter.

य आत्मदा बलदा यस्य विश्व उपासते प्रशिषं यस्य देवाः । यो३स्येशे द्विपदो यश्चतुष्पदस्तस्य देवस्य । क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

He who bestoweth life, bestoweth strength—whose ordinance all serve, whose ordinance even the Gods obey; who is lord of the two-footed and the four-footed—of that God: this is the offence against the wrathful One, whoso, thus knowing, injureth a learned Brahman. Up—make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: in requital loose forth the nooses upon the Brahma-hurter.

एकपाद् द्विपदो भूयो वि चक्रमे द्विपात् त्रिपादमभ्येऽति पश्चात्। चतुष्पाच्चक्रे द्विपदामभिस्वरे संपश्यन् पङ्क्तिमुपतिष्ठमानस्तस्य देवस्य । क्रुद्धस्यैतदागो य एवं विद्वांसं ब्राह्मणं जिनाति । उद् वेपय रोहित प्र क्षिणीहि ब्रह्मज्यस्य प्रति मुञ्च पाशान्

One-footed, he strode forth beyond the two-footed; two-footed, from behind he overtook the three-footed. Four-footed, he made the two-footed with directed cry, surveying the ordered line as he stood attendant—of that God. This is the offence against the wrathful One: whoso, thus knowing, injureth a learned Brahman. Up—make him tremble, O Rohita; waste him away: in requital loose forth the nooses upon the Brahma-hurter.

Mantra 26

कृष्णायाः पुत्रो अर्जुनो रात्र्या वत्सोऽजायत । स ह द्यामधि रोहति रुहो रुरोह रोहितः

Of Kṛṣṇā was born a son, Arjuna; of Night a calf was generated. He verily mounteth upon the heaven: the Climber hath climbed—Rohita hath arisen.

Here Rohita functions as a solar-royal punitive power—an enforcer of cosmic order—who is asked to prosecute and restrain the person who harms a learned Brahmin.

The hymn treats pāśa (“noose/bond”) as the mechanism of divine restraint: the offender is to be seized, restricted, and made unable to continue aggression, with wasting-away as the consequence of guilt.
