Sukta 49

Sukta 6.49

This hymn is a wide-ranging invocation that begins with Mitra–Varuṇa—guardians of ṛta (cosmic order) and right conduct—asking them to come, hear, and bestow auspicious protection together with Agni’s effective power. It then expands into a multi-deity prayer (including Pūṣan as guide of paths), seeking inspired speech, safe passage, luminous “streams” of support, and finally enduring prosperity, secure dwelling, and victory over godless hostility.

Mitra and Varuṇa are invoked as suvrata, steadfast in sacred law, bestowers of sumná (grace), hearing the hymn and arriving to the sacrifice; Varuṇa’s sovereignty and Mitra’s harmonizing friendship uphold social and cosmic rightness, while Agni functions as the present, sacrificial force that carries prayer and makes the divine aid effective.

Inside Sukta 49

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The poet praises the ‘noble host’ of right-will—Mitra–Varuṇa—inviting them, with Agni, to arrive and listen (RV 6.49.1).

  2. Development

The hymn widens from ethical-sovereign guardianship to practical life-needs: guidance on paths, the quickening of inspired speech and thought, and the securing of luminous supports (e.g., Pūṣan’s guidance in RV 6.49.8).

  3. Climax

A comprehensive boon-request: abundant, people-leading wealth and heroic strength under the guardianship of ṛta—prosperity that is not merely material but truth-protected.

  4. Where it settles

It ends by asking for an undecaying dwelling and the power to stride beyond ‘adevī’ (godless/unguided) hostility, reaching communities aligned with the gods (RV 6.49.15).

The deity: Mitra–Varuṇa, with Agni as the operative power

  • Cosmic functionUpholding ṛta: maintaining truthful order in nature and society, guarding oaths and right relations (Mitra), exercising moral sovereignty and surveillance (Varuṇa), and ensuring the sacrifice’s linkage between humans and gods (Agni).
  • Inner significanceMitra–Varuṇa represent inner alignment: truthful speech, ethical restraint, and harmonious cooperation; Agni is the awakened will and discernment that ‘conveys’ intention into action; Pūṣan symbolizes guided movement—finding the right way through uncertainty.

The seer

  • Bharadvāja Bārhaspatya (traditional attribution for Maṇḍala 6)Bharadvāja gotra; Bārhaspatya (connected with Bṛhaspati) · Chief seer-family of the Sixth Maṇḍala, renowned for hymns that join strict ṛta-ethics with practical boons—protection, victory, and well-ordered prosperity—often mediated through Agni and the Ādityas.

Frequently Asked Questions

The hymn primarily addresses Mitra and Varuṇa (the Ādityas who uphold ṛta), with Agni included as the active sacrificial power. It also brings in Pūṣan as a guide and protector of paths.

It asks for divine hearing and protection, guidance on journeys and life-paths, inspired thought and speech, abundant wealth and strength, a secure home, and the ability to overcome hostile forces opposed to the gods.

Because the prosperity requested is framed as ‘guarded by ṛta’—meaning it should be stable, lawful, and ethically supported. Mitra–Varuṇa embody this order, so aligning with them is presented as the basis of lasting well-being.
