Dyāvāpṛthivī (Heaven and Earth)

This hymn praises Dyāvāpṛthivī (Heaven-and-Earth) as the primordial, vast parents who widen space, uphold ṛta (cosmic order), and make the sacrifice shine. Vāmadeva asks them to become luminous through pure hymns, to grant broad protection, and to seat themselves around the yajña so the worshipper may be steady on the right path.

Mantra 1
मही द्यावापृथिवी इह ज्येष्ठे रुचा भवतां शुचयद्भिरर्कैः । यत्सीं वरिष्ठे बृहती विमिन्वन्रुवद्धोक्षा पप्रथानेभिरेवैः ॥
धरती और आसमान दोनों बड़े हैं। यह हमारे लिए चमकें। जब यह अपना काम करता है तो सब जगह फैल जाता है। जैसे बैल चीखता है और आगे बढ़ता है, वैसे ही यह भी फैलता है।

देवी देवेभिर्यजते यजत्रैरमिनती तस्थतुरुक्षमाणे । ऋतावरी अद्रुहा देवपुत्रे यज्ञस्य नेत्री शुचयद्भिरर्कैः ॥
दो देवियाँ हैं जो भगवान के साथ खड़ी हैं। यह लोगों की पूजा करते हैं और कभी कम नहीं होते। दोनों सच का धरम निभाते हैं, कोई धोखा नहीं देती। यह भगवान की बेटियाँ हैं और यज्ञ को सही रास्ते पे ले जाती हैं। इनके भक्ति के गीत सब को साफ करते हैं।

स इत्स्वपा भुवनेष्वास य इमे द्यावापृथिवी जजान । उर्वी गभीरे रजसी सुमेके अवंशे धीरः शच्या समैरत् ॥
वो महान शक्ति वाले हैं जो दुनिया में हमेशा से हैं। इन्होंने ही आसमान और धरती को बनाया है। दोनों बहुत बड़े हैं और गहरे हैं, और पक्के से बने हैं। रिशि ने अपनी शक्ति से दोनों को साथ-साथ कर दिया है।

नू रोदसी बृहद्भिर्नो वरूथैः पत्नीवद्भिरिषयन्ती सजोषाः । उरूची विश्वे यजते नि पातं धिया स्याम रथ्यः सदासाः ॥
अब आसमान और धरती हमें अपने बड़े आश्रय में रखें। दोनों मिल के चलते हैं जैसे पति-पत्नी हो। दोनों चमकते हैं और सब की पूजा करते हैं। हमें रखें और हम भी उनके साथ चलने वाले बन जाएं। हम सदा रास्ते पे चलें।

प्र वां महि द्यवी अभ्युपस्तुतिं भरामहे । शुची उप प्रशस्तये ॥
हम आप दोनों बड़े चमकने वाले के लिए अपनी भक्ति का गीत गाते हैं। आप दोनों आसमान में हैं और हम आपकी तरफ आते हैं। हम साफ दिल से आपकी प्रशंसा करते हैं और आपके पास आते हैं।

पुनाने तन्वा मिथः स्वेन दक्षेण राजथः । ऊह्याथे सनादृतम् ॥
दोनों अपने आप को साफ करते हैं और अपनी शक्ति से राज करते हैं। दोनों एक दूसरे के साथ मिल के सच का काम करते हैं। यह हमेशा से सच का धरम निभाते आए हैं।
Mantra 7
मही मित्रस्य साधथस्तरन्ती पिप्रती ऋतम् । परि यज्ञं नि षेदथुः ॥
यह शक्ति मित्र का बड़ा काम करती है। वो आगे बढ़ के सच्चाई को पकड़ती है और पूरा करती है। यज्ञ के चारों तरफ फैल के उसमें बैठ जाती है। इससे सब ठीक हो जाता है।
