Inside Sukta 91

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni is kindled “with the wakeful,” growing bright in the home and taking his seat as the universal Hotṛ.

  2. Development

The hymn expands Agni’s identity from household fire to cosmic priestly intelligence—he is the accomplisher of the ritual session and the unsurpassed mati chosen in every scale of offering.

  3. Climax

Exclusive election of Agni: in small and great oblations alike, “none other than you” is chosen for the great work, affirming Agni as the single effective mediator.

  4. Where it settles

The praise resolves into a concrete boon: may the offering enter Agni’s mouth rightly, and may he set in the worshippers victorious, heroic, widely praised, expansive wealth.

The deity: Agni

  • Cosmic functionMediator between humans and devas: he receives oblations, conveys them upward, safeguards ṛta through correct ritual action, and energizes prosperity and heroic force in the community.
