Sukta 48

Sukta 10.48

This hymn is Indra’s first-person self-proclamation, declaring his primordial lordship over wealth, victory, and the right distribution of “enjoyment” (bhójana) to the sacrificer. Indra recounts his overpowering of opponents who would weaponize force against him, and he asserts his unassailable status among the divine classes (Ādityas, Vasus, Rudriyas). The sukta functions as a praise-hymn that strengthens confidence in Indra’s protection and in the efficacy of offering and right speech.

Mantras

Mantra 1

Mantra 2

Mantra 3

Mantra 4

Mantra 5

Mantra 6

Mantra 7

Mantra 8

Mantra 9

Mantra 10

Mantra 11

The rite, step by step

  • Establish the sacred fire(s) and seat the rite with ācamana and sankalpa (intent for protection/prosperity).

  • If Soma is present: present Soma as Indra’s beloved offering, accompanying with praise and requests for strength and wealth.
  • Conclude with a brief śānti/āśīrvāda: gratitude, and a resolve to act with firm speech and humility (namasvin) rather than arrogance.

Offerings

  • Soma (where applicable)
  • Ghee/ājya oblations
  • Grain or puroḍāśa-style offering (regional practice)
  • Water libations and simple naivedya in non-Soma contexts
