Sukta 73

Sukta 1.73

Rishi

Madhucchandā Vaiśvāmitra (traditional for RV 1.73)

Chandas

Gāyatrī/Anuṣṭubh not applicable here; RV 1.73 is commonly Triṣṭubh (probable for this verse)

RV 1.73 is an invocation to Agni as the well-guiding Hotṛ who expands the sacrificer’s “home” (sadman) into a space of blessing, prosperity, and right order. The hymn praises Agni’s wise leadership (supraṇīti), his power to release the flow of Ṛta (imagined as cows and rivers breaking obstruction), and ends by asking that the poet’s words be pleasing and that Agni’s well-yoked rule bring wealth and divinely allotted fame.

Inside Sukta 73

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni is praised as ancestral, well-won plenitude and as the wise guide who instructs the discerning, entering the home like a welcome guest and functioning as the priest who opens the sacrificial space.

  2. Development

The hymn develops Agni’s role as establisher of Ṛta: nourishment swells (cows of Ṛta), luminous portions are dispensed, and the life-giving currents (rivers) press through obstruction—imagery of release, right order, and increase.

  3. Climax

The breakthrough motif peaks where Ṛta’s powers flow “apart and together,” overcoming the rock of blockage—Agni’s fire as the decisive force that makes hidden abundance accessible.

  4. Where it settles

The poet offers concluding ucathas (utterances) asking they be pleasing to Agni, and prays to sustain Agni’s well-yoked governance, gaining wealth and divinely allotted glory (śravas).

The deity: Agni

  • Cosmic functionHe mediates between humans and gods by carrying offerings, establishing Ṛta (cosmic order), and clearing obstacles so that nourishment, waters, and prosperity can flow.
  • Inner significanceAgni symbolizes awakened discernment and transformative will: the inner fire that guides the mind rightly, digests experience, and turns intention into luminous, ordered action.

The seer

  • Madhucchandā VaiśvāmitraVaiśvāmitra (descendant of Viśvāmitra; Kuśika line in later tradition) · Among the earliest and most celebrated seers of the Rigveda, associated with foundational Agni hymns and the Vaiśvāmitra poetic style that links ritual precision with inner illumination.
