RV 1.15 is a Gāyatrī hymn that invites Indra to drink the Soma in harmony with ṛta (right order), so that his strength and protection may manifest for the sacrificer. It moves through the Soma-pressing atmosphere—stones, priests, and the wealth-giving power Draviṇodā—then closes by grounding the rite in the Gārhapatya fire, with Agni as the orderly leader of sacrifice.

Inside Sukta 15

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct summons to Indra to drink Soma in accordance with ṛtu/ṛta—right timing, right law, right measure.

  2. Development

The hymn situates Indra’s coming within the concrete Soma-rite: the pressed drops, the adhvara (uninjured rite), and the community of ritual agents; prosperity is framed as a sacrificial fruit through Draviṇodā.

  3. Climax

The wealth-giving power is explicitly adored amid the pressing-stones and sacrifice, turning the rite into a channel of plenitude and effective divine presence.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn seals the order of worship by returning to Agni and the Gārhapatya foundation: the sacrifice is led correctly, and offerings are directed to the gods for the sincere seeker (devayate).

The deity: Indra

  • Cosmic functionHe upholds divine sovereignty in the middle world, releases powers and plenitude, and turns the tide of conflict in favor of ṛta by energizing the gods’ action through Soma.
  • Inner significanceIndra signifies awakened will-force and victorious clarity in the human being—strength that becomes effective when the inner offering is made in right rhythm, measure, and truth.

The seer

  • Medhātithi KāṇvaKāṇva (Kanva-gotra) · A prominent Kāṇva seer of Mandala 1, known for lucid Soma- and Indra-centered hymns that emphasize ṛta (cosmic order) as the right way of invoking divine power.
