Medhātithi Kāṇva (traditional for RV 1.16)
Indra
Gāyatrī
This Gāyatrī hymn of Medhātithi Kāṇva is an urgent invitation to Indra to come swiftly with his tawny steeds to the Soma-pressing and drink. The poet offers praise (stoma) as a seat for the god, asks him to be exhilarated by Soma like a thirsty bull, and finally petitions Indra (Śatakratu) to fulfill the worshippers’ desire with cattle, horses, and victorious strength.

Mantra 1
आ त्वा वहन्तु हरयो वृषणं सोमपीतये । इन्द्र त्वा सूरचक्षसः ॥
हे इंद्र, तेरे भले घोड़े तुझे यहाँ लाएं। सोम रस पीने के लिए आओ। जो लोग रोशनी देखते हैं वो तुम्हे बुलाते हैं। आओ और इस रस का मज़ा लो।
Mantra 2
इमा धाना घृतस्नुवो हरी इहोप वक्षतः । इन्द्रं सुखतमे रथे ॥
यह अनाज घी में भिगवा के है। दोनों भले घोड़े इसको यहाँ लाओ। इंद्र को उसके अच्छे रथ पे बिठा के लाओ। वो रथ बहुत सुख देता है।

इन्द्रं प्रातर्हवामह इन्द्रं प्रयत्यध्वरे । इन्द्रं सोमस्य पीतये ॥
सुबह होने पर हम इंद्र को पुकारते हैं। यज्ञ का काम जब आगे बढ़ता है, तब भी इंद्र को बुलाते हैं। सोम पीने के लिए भी इंद्र का नाम लेते हैं। ताकि वो ताकत ले कर हमें जीत दिलाए।

उप नः सुतमा गहि हरिभिरिन्द्र केशिभिः । सुते हि त्वा हवामहे ॥
इंद्र, हमारे पास आ जाओ। सोम तैयार है, उसके पास आओ। तुम्हारी चमकिली ताकें तुम्हारे साथ हैं। हम तुम्हे इस लिए बुलाते हैं ताकि तुम आ के खुश हो जाओ।

सेमं नः स्तोममा गह्युपेदं सवनं सुतम् । गौरो न तृषितः पिब ॥
हमारी इस स्तुति के पास आओ। यह सोम निचोड़ा हुआ तैयार है। जैसे प्यासा बैल पानी पीता है, वैसे ही तुम भी इसको पियो। इससे तुम्हारी ताकत बढ़े गी।

इमे सोमास इन्दवः सुतासो अधि बर्हिषि । ताँ इन्द्र सहसे पिब ॥
यह सोम के बूंदें यहाँ हैं। इनको निचोड़ के वेदी पर रख दिया है। इंद्र, तुम इनको पियो। इससे तुम्हारी ताकत और भी बढ़े गी।

अयं ते स्तोमो अग्रियो हृदिस्पृगस्तु शंतमः । अथा सोमं सुतं पिब ॥
यह स्तुति सबसे पहले तुम्हारे लिए है। इसका तुम्हारे दिल पर असर हो और शांति दे। फिर इस सोम को पियो। इससे अंदर खुशी और ताकत आएगी।

विश्वमित्सवनं सुतमिन्द्रो मदाय गच्छति । वृत्रहा सोमपीतये ॥
जब भी कोई सोम पीस के पूजा करता है, इंद्र वहाँ आता है। वो खुशी और मस्ती के लिए आता है। वृत्र को मारना वाला इंद्र सोम पीने आता है। यह ताकत हम में भी जाग उठनी चाहिए।

सेमं नः काममा पृण गोभिरश्वैः शतक्रतो । स्तवाम त्वा स्वाध्यः ॥
शतक्रतु, हमारे दिल की इच्छा पूरी कर दो। हमें गाय और घोड़े देकर हमारा काम चला दो। हम तुम्हारी स्तुति करते हैं अपने दिल से। तुम्हारी ताकत से हम पूरे हो जाएँगे।
