Indra (Soma-drinker)
Gāyatrī
RV 1.15 is a Gāyatrī hymn that invites Indra to drink the Soma in harmony with ṛta (right order), so that his strength and protection may manifest for the sacrificer. It moves through the Soma-pressing atmosphere—stones, priests, and the wealth-giving power Draviṇodā—then closes by grounding the rite in the Gārhapatya fire, with Agni as the orderly leader of sacrifice.
Mantra 1
इन्द्र सोमं पिब ऋतुना त्वा विशन्त्विन्दवः । मत्सरासस्तदोकसः ॥
Indra, drink the Soma according to the right season and law; let the pressing drops enter you—those rousing currents that are at home in That (the truth-world).
Mantra 2
मरुतः पिबत ऋतुना पोत्राद्यज्ञं पुनीतन । यूयं हि ष्ठा सुदानवः ॥
Maruts, drink the Soma in the right measure; from the purifying vessel refine the sacrifice—clarify our offering. For you indeed are the good givers, the generous powers of the storm-force.
Mantra 3
अभि यज्ञं गृणीहि नो ग्नावो नेष्टः पिब ऋतुना । त्वं हि रत्नधा असि ॥
Turn your chant toward our sacrifice, O pressing-stone, O Neshṭar; drink in the right measure. For you indeed are the holder and placer of the treasure—of the luminous riches of realization.
Mantra 4
अग्ने देवाँ इहा वह सादया योनिषु त्रिषु । परि भूष पिब ऋतुना ॥
Agni, bring the gods here; seat them in the three wombs (the triple foundation of the work). Arrange all around in beauty and order; drink in the right measure.
Mantra 5
ब्राह्मणादिन्द्र राधसः पिबा सोममृतूँरनु । तवेद्धि सख्यमस्तृतम् ॥
From the priestly power (brahman), O Indra, drink the Soma of thy plenitude, following the right seasons and measures of the Truth; for thine indeed is the unbroken friendship (with the seeker).
Mantra 6
युवं दक्षं धृतव्रत मित्रावरुण दूळभम् । ऋतुना यज्ञमाशाथे ॥
You two, Mitra and Varuṇa, keepers of the firm law, uphold the effective power (dakṣa) hard to assail; by the Truth’s right rhythm (ṛtu) you attain and foster the sacrifice within us.
Mantra 7
द्रविणोदा द्रविणसो ग्रावहस्तासो अध्वरे । यज्ञेषु देवमीळते ॥
The givers of plenitude, bearing the pressing-stones in their hands, in the unhurt path of the offering, in the sacrifices adore the Divine—Draviṇodā, the power that grants inner riches.
Mantra 8
द्रविणोदा ददातु नो वसूनि यानि शृण्विरे । देवेषु ता वनामहे ॥
May Draviṇodā give us those luminous riches that are heard and confirmed among the gods; those we seek to win in the divine realms (of consciousness).
Mantra 9
द्रविणोदाः पिपीषति जुहोत प्र च तिष्ठत । नेष्ट्रादृतुभिरिष्यत ॥
Draviṇodā longs to be satisfied: offer the oblation and stand forth; urged on from the guiding leader (neṣṭṛ) by the right seasons/measures, move forward on the path.
Mantra 10
यत्त्वा तुरीयमृतुभिर्द्रविणोदो यजामहे । अध स्मा नो ददिर्भव ॥
Since we worship thee, O Draviṇodā, as the ‘fourth’ with the ṛtus—then become for us the giver, the one who bestows in fullness.
Mantra 11
अश्विना पिबतं मधु दीद्यग्नी शुचिव्रता । ऋतुना यज्ञवाहसा ॥
O Aśvins, drink the honeyed delight; bright as kindled fires, pure in your law, you who carry the sacrifice—come by the right rhythm of Truth and take the sweetness into your power.
Mantra 12
गार्हपत्येन सन्त्य ऋतुना यज्ञनीरसि । देवान्देवयते यज ॥
With the Gārhapatya fire as thy foundation, abiding in truth, thou art the leader of the sacrifice by right measure; sacrifice to the gods for the one who seeks the Divine.
It teaches that Indra’s strength and help come when Soma is offered in harmony with ṛta—right order, right timing, and right measure—so the sacrifice becomes effective.
Draviṇodā represents the wealth-giving power that arises from a well-performed sacrifice—prosperity as a sacred outcome of correct ritual action.
It closes by grounding the rite in the steady household fire (Gārhapatya) and affirming Agni as the leader of sacrifice (yajña-nī), who carries offerings to the gods for the sincere seeker.
