Discriminating the real from the unreal
In Chapter 11, Ashtavakra outlines the specific convictions (nishchaya) that lead to liberation and inner peace. He instructs Janaka that suffering is rooted in worry and the false sense of agency. By realizing that changes in existence, fortune, and misfortune are governed by the inherent nature of things or fate, the seeker becomes free from anxiety and attachment. Ashtavakra emphasizes that the Lord (Ishvara) is the sole creator, and the Self is pure consciousness, distinct from the body and encompassing the entire universe. The discourse highlights that a realized being views the world as a transient wonder lacking ultimate reality. This shift in perspective allows one to act without the burden of doership, remaining content in both gain and loss. Ultimately, the chapter teaches that peace is attained when one rests as mere consciousness, untainted by the dualities of life and the memories of past actions.
Verse 1
Verse 2
Verse 3
Verse 4
Verse 5
Verse 6
Verse 7
Verse 8
Ashtavakra asserts that suffering arises solely from worry. By realizing that all events are governed by nature or fate, one eliminates worry and attains peace.
It teaches the conviction that 'I am not the body, and the body is not mine.' The true Self is pure consciousness, separate from physical attributes and past actions.
One who is certain that the Lord is the sole creator becomes free from all desires, remains peaceful, and does not attach to any worldly objects or outcomes.
