Sūrya with Mitra-Varuṇa, Aryaman, Aditi (Ādityas)

This hymn of Vasiṣṭha invokes Sūrya as he rises to proclaim satya (truth) and calls on the Ādityas—especially Mitra–Varuṇa, Aryaman, and Aditi—to guide the worshippers on the divine path. It presents the Ādityas as vigilant guardians of cosmic order who lead even the unawakened mind, provide a “ford” through peril, and carry the devotee beyond difficulties into svasti (well-being). The sukta’s purpose is protection, right-direction (devatrā), and safe passage through moral and existential “durgas” by aligning speech and conduct with ṛta/satya.
Mantra 1
यदद्य सूर्य ब्रवोऽनागा उद्यन्मित्राय वरुणाय सत्यम् । वयं देवत्रादिते स्याम तव प्रियासो अर्यमन्गृणन्तः ॥
O Sun, as you rise today proclaiming the truth to Mitra and Varuṇa—may we, moving in the divine direction, O Aditi, become dear to you, O Aryaman, by our utterance of praise.
Mantra 2
एष स्य मित्रावरुणा नृचक्षा उभे उदेति सूर्यो अभि ज्मन् । विश्वस्य स्थातुर्जगतश्च गोपा ऋजु मर्तेषु वृजिना च पश्यन् ॥
This Sun, O Mitra and Varuṇa, the human-seeing eye, rises over both realms; guardian of all that stands and moves, he beholds among mortals the straight and also the crooked.
Mantra 3
अयुक्त सप्त हरितः सधस्थाद्या ईं वहन्ति सूर्यं घृताचीः । धामानि मित्रावरुणा युवाकुः सं यो यूथेव जनिमानि चष्टे ॥
He has yoked from the common seat the seven shining steeds that bear the Sun, streaming with clarified light. O Mitra and Varuṇa, the youthful one orders the domains, and like a leader of a herd he surveys the births and becomings.
Mantra 4
उद्वां पृक्षासो मधुमन्तो अस्थुरा सूर्यो अरुहच्छुक्रमर्णः । यस्मा आदित्या अध्वनो रदन्ति मित्रो अर्यमा वरुणः सजोषाः ॥
Up for you the honeyed draughts have been set; the Sun has mounted the bright flood. For him the Ādityas—Mitra, Aryaman, Varuṇa—in one accord, prepare the path of the journey.
Mantra 5
इमे चेतारो अनृतस्य भूरेर्मित्रो अर्यमा वरुणो हि सन्ति । इम ऋतस्य वावृधुर्दुरोणे शग्मासः पुत्रा अदितेरदब्धाः ॥
These—Mitra, Aryaman, Varuṇa—are the discerners of the vast falsehood. These, in the home of being, have increased the Truth; mighty sons of Aditi, they are unbetrayable.
Mantra 6
इमे मित्रो वरुणो दूळभासोऽचेतसं चिच्चितयन्ति दक्षैः । अपि क्रतुं सुचेतसं वतन्तस्तिरश्चिदंहः सुपथा नयन्ति ॥
These Mitra and Varuṇa, hard to assail, awaken even the unperceiving being by their powers of right-discrimination; shaping in us a will that is luminous in consciousness, they lead us by the good path beyond even the crookedness of sin and inner distress.
Mantra 7
इमे दिवो अनिमिषा पृथिव्याश्चिकित्वांसो अचेतसं नयन्ति । प्रव्राजे चिन्नद्यो गाधमस्ति पारं नो अस्य विष्पितस्य पर्षन् ॥
These sleepless watchers of Heaven and Earth, the wise knowers, lead even the unperceiving mind; even where the currents are for the wanderer, there is a ford—may they carry us to the farther shore of this perilous expanse.
Mantra 8
यद्गोपावददितिः शर्म भद्रं मित्रो यच्छन्ति वरुणः सुदासे । तस्मिन्ना तोकं तनयं दधाना मा कर्म देवहेळनं तुरासः ॥
When Aditi, with the guarding power, and Mitra with Varuṇa grant the happy shelter to Sudās, then, holding fast within that grace our child and our lineage of becoming, let us not do the act that offends the gods, O swift ones.
Mantra 9
अव वेदिं होत्राभिर्यजेत रिपः काश्चिद्वरुणध्रुतः सः । परि द्वेषोभिरर्यमा वृणक्तूरुं सुदासे वृषणा उ लोकम् ॥
Let him perform the sacrifice with the priestly powers at the altar; Varuṇa, who holds by his law, will cast down whatever hostile breaker there is. May Aryaman, encompassing the hatreds, choose for Sudās the wide world-space, O mighty ones.
Mantra 10
सस्वश्चिद्धि समृतिस्त्वेष्येषामपीच्येन सहसा सहन्ते । युष्मद्भिया वृषणो रेजमाना दक्षस्य चिन्महिना मृळता नः ॥
Even what is self-moving and disorderly is driven into right joining by their vehement, hidden strength; the mighty ones, trembling under your awe, by the greatness of discernment—have mercy on us.
Mantra 11
यो ब्रह्मणे सुमतिमायजाते वाजस्य सातौ परमस्य रायः । सीक्षन्त मन्युं मघवानो अर्य उरु क्षयाय चक्रिरे सुधातु ॥
He who offers for the brahman (the soul’s formative word) a good thought, wins in the conquest the plenitude of force and the highest felicity. The noble givers sharpen their ardour; they have made a wide dwelling for settled increase—well-founded.
Mantra 12
इयं देव पुरोहितिर्युवभ्यां यज्ञेषु मित्रावरुणावकारि । विश्वानि दुर्गा पिपृतं तिरो नो यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥
This guiding presence set in front has been made for you two, Mitra and Varuṇa, in the sacrifices. Carry us beyond all difficult passages; you protect us always with your states of well-being.
It asks Sūrya and the Ādityas—especially Mitra–Varuṇa—to keep the worshipper aligned with truth (satya/ṛta), guide the mind, and carry one safely beyond dangers into well-being (svasti).
They are Ādityas who guard cosmic and moral order: Mitra supports harmony and right agreements, while Varuṇa upholds the binding law of ṛta and protects against ethical and existential peril.
It is an image for a safe crossing through difficult, risky conditions—outer obstacles and inner confusion. The Ādityas are prayed to provide the crossing and lead the seeker to safety, clarity, and stability.
